Cal Poly SLO Class of 2028 Freshman Discussion Thread

this day is so long and I have a super important work meeting from 2:00-3:00. UGH!!! I am a Cal Poly alum and it wasn’t a top choice for my daughter until we took the actual tour last month. Now she really really wants to go. 5% acceptance for poli sci… we are on pins and needles.

Sorry if this is duplicative but (1) do decisions come all at once or in waves? (2) do we think they send emails or update the portal first?

Historically, decisions are posted in waves with admits in the first wave followed by waitlist wave about a week later and then finally denials in a wave about a week after that. There are some admits and waitlists that are posted in between the major waves.

The student portal usually updates first and then an email follows a few hours later.

How long does the first admit wave last? Would it be just today or would it span over a couple of days (assuming decisions released today)? thx

For the last 2 years, the admit wave is all the same day.

2022: Cal Poly SLO admit wave started on March 10, 2022 with a mixture of OOS and In-state applicants. Waitlist decisions posted March 18, 2022 along with a few acceptances. Admits for students requiring a portfolio review trickled out on March 24, 2022. Denials were posted on March 30, 2022.

2023: Admit wave with IS and OOS on Friday March 10,2023. Few admits reported March 17-24. Portfolio admits March 24 along with waitlist decisions posted after 6 pm. Denials posted on Thursday March 30. 2023.

Some students do not always check their portals or email on the same day and will post their decisions later in the week but the majority have been pretty much been the same day.

Just wanted to thank you for sharing so much information with all the anxious parents to help us through these long days!

No problem and I understand the stress involved in waiting. Good luck to all applicants.

thanks, I think then it is reasonable to assume that if an acceptance is not received on the first day that the odds of waitlist or rejection become quite strong. My kid goes to a feeder school that sends a lot of kids to CalPoly and I’ve tried to prepare him that if his classmates start discussing acceptances and he doesn’t have one it is safe to assume he won’t be accepted. Thanks again for all of your guidance on the CSUs and UCs!

Yes, the majority of admits are usually posted in the first wave but until you get a decision posted on the portal, there is always hope.

I feel like this is a stupid question, but I was wondering if the Cal Polys (specifically slo and Pomona) make decisions based on student hs location? For example, we live 20 miles from CPP, do you think my son is less likely to be admitted to slo because of his proximity to Pomona? I’m just curious if these 2 polys take that into consideration. I realize that may not be the only reason for rejection.

Cal Poly SLO does take into account proximity to SLO. (but I’m pretty sure that this is a binary thing - you aren’t further penalized for being near Pomona.)

How does SLO do Merit scholarships for freshman? Will it be in the portal with the decision or in an email later? Are students informed before they enroll, or are scholarship offers only made to enrolled incoming freshman?

All CSU’s give priority to applicants within the each campuses local service area but I agree with @btra it is not a negative if you are not local.

SLO gives little in merit scholarships and in previous years, they offered $3000/year for National Merit scholars. If there are any scholarships offered, they are usually listed in the financial aid package which will probably be delayed due to FAFSA issues. Over the years, I have seen some departmental scholarships also that were posted with the FA package but not something to depend on.

Okay. Thank you both.

Do you know what percent of admits are local to SLO?

Son is OOS (NY) and does have the awaiting SAT scores note.

Same here. My kid is kinesiology. It is about as easy to get into Stanford as kinesiology at SLO.

I posted upthread a few days ago but just wanted to mention again that my son, who is a junior at UC Berkeley right now, got denied by SLO. A few others above said the same thing. So if you don’t receive a SLO acceptance, it has no bearing on acceptances by other fantastic schools.

Also for those asking about timelines, my son had to wait at least 2 weeks after SLO acceptances were released before he received his rejection. He wasn’t even in the waitlist group, he just received no communications from SLO whatsoever. It’s an odd way to handle it in my view but it all worked out fine in the end.

Same for my son (admitted to UCI, UCSB, UCD, early SDSU) - he’s now at UCI (3rd year) and will finish early from their Biz program (but now wants to be an elementary school teacher - which is totally exciting!!). The two weeks of not hearing anything from SLO was very disappointing and frustrating. All worked out in the end though. I just hope my D24 does not have to face the same silence as this is her first choice.
