Hello @Gumbymom! I had a quick question that I’m sure I could probably find the answer to but somehow I can’t break through given all the noise in a busy household over Thanksgiving weekend.
I’m helping my niece look at how to enter her grades into the CSU application (she’s out of state, from Kentucky), and we want to make sure she’s coding the courses correctly. If she has the equivalent of “honors” classes at her magnet HS in KY but they are called something else, i.e., “advanced,” should she call them “honors” in the application? Or do they just go in as “none” if they are from an out of state high school and therefore don’t have the official “CA stamp of approval” as 'honors"?
OK perfect! That’s pretty much the conclusion I was getting to, and that’s exactly what she did – she’s just worked “honors” into the course titles. Thanks so much for your quick answer!
My D is a senior in HS and applied a few days ago. I feel like she has a 50/50 chance of getting in. Weighted 4.15 with IB/Dual credit. does anyone have experience with being weight listed? Is it harder from out of state?
OOS applicants are in a separate application pool and SLO does not break out admit data based on residency. If the SLO GPA is 4.15, she is competitive.
No waitlist data from 2023 but you can see how the numbers vary from year to year.
Below are several years of Waitlist data.
2022:
Number of qualified applicants offered a place on waiting list: 10233
Number of wait-listed students admitted: 345
2021:
Number of qualified applicants offered a place on waiting list: 9829
Number accepting a place on the waiting list:
Number of wait-listed students admitted: 978
New to CC. My S applied Business Admin OOS. Been reading thread and calculating his SLO GPA: 4.13, which I understand to put him in the lower middle of Business admits from last year GPA-wise? (4.08-4.25)
My daughter is applying as a Biology major. OOS 4.15 CSU GPA, and IB classes in grades 10,11,12. I feel like her chances are decent at getting in but just looked at how competitive it was last year so now not sure. Is it harder for OOS?
My daughter has her heart set on CPoly Slo and applied as Biology major. She is OOS applicant. I can’t tell what her chances are since it is such an impacted major. 4.15 CSU with Ib classes and some dual credit. Wondering is she has a shot at this school? Looks just amazing and such a perfect fit for the type of learner she is. Wants to do pre-med
Since SLO does not breakout admission data by major, it is hard to determine. It will all depend on how competitive the OOS applicant pool is for Biology. Good luck to her.
While not specific to a Biology major, OOS/non-resident Females have the highest acceptance rate in the latest data available from 2022. From the Cal State Dashboard:
Good morning! I understand that Cal Poly is test blind, but the application did ask for self-reported SAT scores. Meanwhile my son received a higher score on the December test. Should he somehow notify admissions of this update? We’re not sure how to proceed. Thanks!
The SAT score that you self report on the CSU application is only used for course placement (Math and English) and not for admissions. No reason to contact admissions for an update.
He can submit his official SAT scores once he is admitted and enrolled.
Interesting…I wonder why? My son (Class of 29) is interested in applying for business but could face tougher odds. This is a good reason to apply to a range of schools and programs!
They do not look at gender, so the likely conclusion is female applicants have a higher gpa and other metrics that SLO uses. Also, the most applied to (and most rejected) major is Computer Science which is usually mostly male applicants.
This chat thread has been very helpful so now I have another question. I was looking at more info on CP and noticed that it helps to list math done before high school. I am trying to determine if it worth it to contact the admissions office to update my daughter’s classes. She took Algebra 1 in 8th grade, Algebra 2 in the summer between 8th and 9th. She then took Algegra 3 in Freshman high school year. She has since had 5 years of math including now dual credit statistics as a senior. Is it worth it to pester the admissions office to see if the 8th grade math needs to be counted?
