Cal Poly SLO Class of 2028 Freshman Discussion Thread

Hello All - My Daughter got accepted into Aerospace Engineering. Got to know from the portal just now, no email yet. Was really surprised, expecting Wait List/Reject based on the discussions on decision timelines here and on Reddit

The facts don’t support your argument, my friend. UCLA, UC Irvine, UC San Diego managed to tell everyone on their list yes, no, maybe in a single day. As did UVA, UNC, U Mass, UT, etc. Cal Poly is the anomoly. It sounds liked they’ve been this way for a while, and I have no idea why. Entitled parents? You’re entitled to your opinion, but those of us who are sitting around wondering do have children who are just as anxious as we are. We only have so many opportunities to visit campuses without missing school, and the longer we wait, the less we are able. Sorry if my point of view offends anyone.

Couldn’t agree more. The way that SLO (and SDSU) handled this process is terrible!

Thankfully my DD has received acceptances from UCI, UCLA and UCSD … so SLO isn’t on the radar anymore. But I’d hope that these schools would review and revise the way that they handle admissions!

Have you seen anyone who got in for graphic communication? I haven’t seen any acceptances so far.

My daughter is waiting to hear from their Design/Studio Arts program. As far as I know, portfolio students have not yet been notified…unless someone here has heard differently.

I have been a follower of CC and then a contributor since 2011. The CSU’s have always done rolling decisions so nothing has changed in 13 years, so that is why I started keeping track of these schools decision timelines and post them on the Freshman discussion threads so anxious parents and students are informed it can be long and frustrating admission cycle.

Good luck to all students still waiting.

Just remember where you go for Undergrad will not define you, it is what you do with the resources available to you that will make you successful along with loving the schools that love you back.

Mere speculation, but Cal Poly is a CSU with a CSU budget, but with the popularity of a UC. So I’d speculate that the waves of SLO decisions is to prevent the SLO portal from crashing.

The portal has “crashed” over the years and SLO is one of a select few CSU’s, which have had an increase in applications in recent years.

Blame the CA budget?

I don’t think I have seen anything that shows there are waves. UC Santa Cruz seems to have had 2 waves. I get the impression SLO has done their admit wave and that there will be some small adjustments before denials. But I have not seen anything posted that showed multiple waves in past years.

Do you mean Admittance waves? Most of us have been talking about Decision waves, which include Admits, then Waitlist, then Rejections. This has been SLO’s process for years, per the very first post in this thread.

aka “rolling decisions”

Waves = admits first, then followed by WL’s about a week later, then about a week later, post-WL, rejections.

That’s how SLO has operated for a decade+, as @Gumbymom has mentioned above.

I am speaking only of people getting accepted. Maybe I misunderstand what waves means. I assumed waves was like UC Santa Cruz.

I always thought SLO was one wave of acceptances, then waitlist, then denial. I got the impression alot of people are thinking another wave of acceptances are coming.

Rolling decisions. I did not understand this, I thought rolling decisions meant, well there would be multiple acceptance waves, when it is acceptance, a week later WL, then another week denials, is odd to me. You already know the decision from the first wave. I thought UC Merced and Riverside with rolling decisions meant they are still accepting students, this explains why no more have posted. It is all just one wave, with the exception of UC Santa Cruz it seems.

It is better described as batches rather than waves. It is always three decision batches (plus transfers/portfolios) with just a few special cases going out individually outside those batches.

The big mystery is why there needs to be a week + between those batches.

my son is right there waiting with your daughter. unless she’s heard by now. The tension is definitely NOT delicious.

Everything looks fine with the application but haven’t heard anything - no yes, no wl, no no. Nothing.

This seems wrong.
Major statistics.

I hope the best for your child

This is tough especially when we know how hard they worked.

I would have never gotten into a college under these circumstances and yet I graduated in top 5percent of my HS and was the top graduate in my college major.

A few years ago the admissions dean told my daughters coach ( she is an athlete at CP ) that he hates admission release day bc he literally has to reject thousands of qualified applicants due to the lack of space/ spots available. There are thousands of applicants strong enough to go and be successful but there just isn’t enough spots.

There is a Construction Management acceptance at my son’s school. The student received their acceptance March 11th, like my kiddo did.

This thread has certainly gotten heavy and scrutinizing. As a mom of two college kiddos and one Senior, I know the college application season is tough. Schools are receiving record numbers of applications each year and students nowadays are applying with so much more in academics and extracurriculars than ever. Comparison is rampant…and I must say, only hurts people more. There is no guarantee of acceptance to a school like CalPoly SLO.
Sometimes the biggest blessings in life are redirection.

Yes, I think what people forget is that Cal Poly(unlike most of the UCs) really admits by specific major. We knew going in that last year polic sci got over 1000 applicants for 90 admit spots. Considering most who apply are the high stats kids, we knew she had a 5-10% chance. I really wish SLO would explain why their process is the way it is. I was thinking maybe it is because of the major aspect… They release the admits first in case some kids decline immediately and then can offer a few more kids an acceptance before the WL goes out… That would make more sense to me. I refuse to believe they just want us to all suffer waiting… I still love SLO. My daughter will be down the road now at UCSB, but I am still sad she won’t be going to SLO(as I am a grad).

I am new to this and misinterpret alot of this information. The UC schools do not admit by specific major? Is that right? I see admission by major on all of the admittances so far and have read that it is very very hard to change majors.
