Cal Poly SLO Class of 2028 Freshman Discussion Thread

All our kids will go somewhere they are meant to go. It however is a process and we all get excited, anxious and many other emotions.

Sometimes I think and wish it were like where I come from and did college. Millions of kids, centralized admissions, only merit based, each student got 3-5 choices, we had to pick and move on. Would start with 100/100 kids and go in reverse order. Every one took same standardized test end of 12 th grade and were graded on that to be eligible for the centralized admissions. No stress except for stress is studying

Fees were also standardized. Two categories- free seat (meant needed excellent academics for reputed college) and paid seat (could get you extra boost to not so top grades).

Was there an email sent out? I rushed to finish my application yesterday after receiving a text that it was due at midnight. Prior to the text, I didn’t receive any other information about it.

There seems to be a Rodeo show going on during the Open House, but I can’t find further information or link to buy tickets. Anyone know about it? We’ve never been to a rodeo and thought that would be an interesting thing to do while at SLO.

Yes. It sold out in less then 5 minutes. Happens every year. More people want to go then there are tickets sold.

If you are on the parents FB page for CP, tickets might go up for sale last minute as people figure out they can’t make it afterall.

It obv doesn’t matter to the school what we think. Yes, of course kid has chosen the school based on earlier admittances assuming nothing comes of CP SLO.

Somehow most other schools, both larger and smaller, have figured out how to notify students in a more compressed timeline. Or hold notifications until they’ve determined each student’s fate with respect to their school. I don’t know what makes CalPoly special in this regard.

Will be ready to help my child move forward or move on. My point is it seems to be a long drawn out process.

It’s the biggest social event on the Cal Poly calendar. Many SLO students get shut out and have to hunt for tickets.

Oops, didn’t know that!

How about the Truck and Tractor Pull show? Is that one fun? Where to buy tickets?

We didn’t get anything. Apparently most people didn’t either. Some said we were just suppose to check the portal but we didn’t know.

We are also waiting for some response for manufacturing engineering (1st) and Industrial Technology and Packaging (2nd). Has there been many posts for acceptance on these majors?

Is it honestly that dynamic? We have applied to many schools with small class sizes as a selling point and it is not handled in this manner.

Still no answer for our S24. At this point, even if he did miraculously get in, this process has at best left us feeling wary of the school’s administration and treatment of prospective students in general. I can’t imagine what life would be like for him dealing with this type of administration as a student. HOW a school conducts a process says a lot about the school and its administration.

I’m awaiting as well! At this point, I’m considering other options such as CSU Fullerton & LMU. Any advice for either?

If by “LMU” you mean Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, we’ve heard nothing but great things about that school. The only reason our son didn’t apply was that they didn’t offer the music ensembles he was looking for, which made me frustrated (the school frustrated us, not our son, lol) because as parents, we really loved what the school had to offer otherwise.

What major for Fullerton? It is a great school. We toured it over the summer and really liked the campus.

I will say admissions is not a reflection of the school in general. Totally understand why you would reach that conclusion but the staff and professors really do care about the students.

FWIW My son has had no issues at all with the administration at CP.

The school states that decisions will go out before April 1. It is still before April 1. I know it is hard to wait, but as for being “wary of the school’s administration and treatment of prospective students” they are still within their stated time frame for releasing a decision. College decision release season is difficult; we truly do not know how any school conducts the process, at all.

This is the only school I know of that does almost all of their acceptances on one day and then 2-3 weeks later sends waitlists and rejections. And every year there are so many families trying to reason why they have not heard yet (major, location, etc) when in fact it is because they are 95% going to be waitlisted or rejected. You can go through the discussion threads of the previous years to see the pattern. It is an unnecessary stressor in a very stressful time and it killed my opinion of SLO when we went through it (daughter waitlisted after endless two week wait) and it seems to be even worse this year (unless they do in fact have a bunch of acceptances in their next wave in which case, I’d have much less of a problem with it).

I understand all the points.

It has me thinking though… these CA schools are publicly funded in large part by taxpayers, right? Why shouldn’t we know the process and/or the reason why an applicant was or was not accepted?

Why should the entire process be this mysterious? Especially for public schools.

I agree. As a California taxpayer, I feel there should be full transparency.
