Cal Poly SLO Class of 2028 Freshman Discussion Thread

Have not seen any Biology majors here but saw one on FB page. I see so many Bio waiting on here but maybe they got a lot of Bio apps.

The estimated admit rate is around 10% and about 4787 estimated applications for 159 spots. Biology application numbers are #3 behind #1 Business Admin and #2 CS so very competitive.

Do you happen to know the business admin acceptance rate? It’s odd how a university primarily known from Engineering received so many business applications. I think it’s due California’s lack of public schools offering business majors besides economics.

Every Cal state has a Business major program, it is the UC’s which have only 3 Undergrad Business schools (UCSD’s Business Grad school does have some Undergrad Business majors) but the majority have Business related majors such as Business Econ, Managerial Econ etc… UC Davis starting Fall 2025 will be offering a new Business major.

That said, SLO’s Orfalea School of Business is very well respected and a top CSU Business school.

Based on 2024-25 projections, they expect 7907 applicants for 607 spots. Overall yield for the College is 30% but we will guesstimate 33% yield to make it easier so the guesstimate acceptance rate is 607x3/7907= 23%

Would have thought the WL decisions would have dropped today. Was hoping to see some activity today.

apparently last year waitlist decisions dropped after 6pm

I really wish there was some transparency on why they wait so long to send waitlists and denials. Just seems cruel when there are so many high stat applicants and so few spots. Why put them through the misery unless there is a legitimate reason to wait.

Agree with this completely, and I will say it does make me look less favorably at an institution. So far, the best roll out goes to UCSB; they set a date, made it clear in advance, and released all decisions at once.

Anyone interested, Application to Honors Program got extended to Thursday.

Hi there. Has there been any second wave of admits, or waitlist or declines, since the initial admits a while back?

This is quite the waiting game. While trying to keep the faith it feels kind of cruel for students who are waiting…

Cruel is the word that comes to mind at this point. It’s just so much to keep hanging on even though we don’t have hope anymore.

Ok, going to be that guy. Disappointingly slow - sure. Can do a better job of rolling out admissions - sure. Cruel seems a bit much.

This has been Poly for years. But in reality, the long wait is true of most colleges. They just do a better job of clocking it in multiple rounds of EA, RD1&2, etc. Visit the Purdue thread for those who applied EA that have been deferred and are still waiting.

I guess I don’t understand how the other CA schools do it? They seem to be able to pretty much do it all at once. So I’m not sure why cal poly can’t/doesn’t

Cruel may be harsh but considering these kids work their tails off, submit in Oct. and will likely hear rejected on the last possible day is rough.

Same exact thing here.

I guess they realized many people didn’t know about the invite so they extended the deadline to Thursday.

Are people hoping for waitlist?

Guess just want to know if there would be any more admits even if it’s few. Waitlist is as good as the rejection with a little over 1% chance of getting off the list. And that would be known very late.

I get that you want to just know because who doesn’t. But the reality is that even if they told you today you were admitted, you most likely are not committing today because you don’t have to until May 15th. As well as Admitted Students day is not until April 13th so you still have time for that as well since they said they will notify by April 1.

I would, if it were my kid, look at what they got into, and start weighing those options and put the focus on them so if CP comes thru with an acceptance or not, you have a plan in place.

This is how they have historically done it and honestly they get enough students every year regardless of how they are viewed in the application process it doesn’t matter to them what we think.

My guess is that everyone who is still hanging out on this thread has already made their alternate plans. But I also don’t think there’s anything wrong with noting that the delay does feel a little…unkind. Most of the admits have known for weeks. Why keep everyone else in the lurch?

They have fewer spots. They can’t over admit so they send out their top choices and wait for results before they send out other offers. If UC over admits they can buffer it but CP can not. With such small classes they can only send admission offers to the students they have room for plus a few more. It’s because of the hands on small classes

It’s really not different. Other schools say admitted or waitlisted. Cp says Admitted. If no news then it’s essentially the same thing as a waitlist.
