Cal Poly SLO Class of 2028 Freshman Discussion Thread

And given the rental market - this can be a blessing (despite the high cost of the on campus apartments)! My son is a current freshman in CENG and I’m thankful to have one more year before we have to deal with the off campus housing chaos.

Yes. Those groups are always required to live on campus for 2 years. However, many get exemptions to not live on campus their 2nd year. It is very easy to get out of the requirement.

I went to an accepted students event today and learned that in Fall 2026 Cal Poly will move from quarters to semesters and they are moving towards a two year on campus living requirement once new dorms are completed.

I don’t if anyone else hasn’t gotten a decision, but I’m expecting a rejection or waitlist tommorow.

Did you finally get a response? I haven’t and it’s frustrating.

No, I haven’t. Is there text under the table for your application status tab in student center?

There’s no text at all, just the words “Go to top”. What major did you apply to?

I see the table and then the words “Go to top” under the table.

Same. For everyone that I know that got a decision, there was text there that said something like “you applied for x and are your decision is pending”. I applied for CS. Did you submit any documents to them recently?

I never had any text at all. I applied for EE and have not submitted anything recently. The only thing I submitted was a transcript a couple of months ago.

I emailed the admissions office and apparently I’m considered international because my freshman year wasn’t in the US, so that’s why my decision is late.

My case is similar. That must be why. Thanks for the info!

It seems like the previous “Official Cal Poly Class of 2028” thread was closed, but if I’m mistaken, moderator, kindly merge this post.

But since I couldn’t find it wanted to share that S24 is having a great time at Open House today and just told me he’s going to commit today. So excited for him!

The Friday open house was great. Saturday, weather turned really bad, so a lot of programs were cancelled, including the parade, the campus tours, and almost all outdoor activities. My son ended up paying $10 to work out in the gym. He said the gym is great.

We went to the rec center tour and my son loved it. (Ah didn’t know there was an option to pay for gym use, otherwise, he would have joined the basketball pick-up games.) It was raining dogs and cats on Saturday and we got all wet from the dorms tour and were disappointed the parade was canceled. Not their fault. We still got good info from the club booths. Friday went great IMHO.

We went to the admitted student tour on Saturday. Couple of takeaways:

Fit - it’s really important that kids go visit - we went twice - fist time last year for a tour. My son didn’t feel the vibe and wasn’t going to apply. Decided to apply and he got accepted. He kept an open mind and went on Saturday. We could definitely see he was not seeing himself there.

We are from San Francisco and my son is a Varsity Captain, high achieving popular kid. Very social but just didn’t like the vibe.

Accepted student day - a bit unorganized but understandable. Check in was a mess and they told everyone to just skip as many events we’re starting and the check in lines were huge!

Parking -confused as to why they charged to park - no other schools charged.

Weird encounter - we needed to use the restroom and went into the performing arts building. The employee working asked if we were there for the agriculture session. We said we needed a restroom. I kept walking to the restroom and the woman continued to drill my husband and son asking twice - just the restroom? Told them to go ahead but to leave immediately after. It was so strange…

That being said - glad we went so he can now focus on the three others he has to choose from (3 UCs and SDSU honors college). I wish everyone well on their journey and he will decline today and hope those on the wait-list hear soon.

Thanks for your post. We went to SDSU admitted students day yesterday, super organized, free easy parking and very spirited! Super beautiful despite the overcast weather. Can I ask you what major your son was for Cal Poly?

Wow, we had the exact the same experience! It’s validating to know it was not just us walking away from the event underwhelmed. Cal Poly is an amazing school and we wished it had hit the mark as it has so many good things to offer (for instance, the major is perfect!). But in the end, D24 also did not feel the vibe. This just speaks to how important it can be to take the time to visit a campus if you have the opportunity/ability. Best of luck to all the new Mustangs!
