Cal Poly SLO Class of 2029 Freshman Discussion Thread

Does anyone know the rough odds of being waitlisted if not accepted last Friday? I’ve been rejected from every other school (10+) except my local state school which I do not want to go to at all (I applied oos). 3.8uw, 4 APs, nearly all honors, 4 years of 2 sports and captain of 1, founder of a club at my school, 1450 sat. Applied engineering everywhere. I’m really hoping there’s a chance for me to get in off the waitlist, if I am waitlisted.

Just filled out the Honors questionnaire on my portal. Is it really just those basic survey questions, or is there an actual application as a follow-up? Just felt like it was too simple for a selective program

Did everyone admitted last week get the honors invitation?

No, not here.

My daughter and another student (scroll up to see comments) realized the same thing. No essay even though it’s discussed in the FAQs. My daughter emailed the honors program to make sure she didn’t miss anything but hasn’t heard back yet. Maybe you could do the same? Seems like prior years had essays.

Cal Poly SLO Results Survey 2025:

This form is for tracking decision results, so it’s all centralized for future students. If you could fill this out once you get your decision, that would be very appreciated!

You can see all other people’s individual responses in the links above, along with overall form statistics (such as what percent got accepted).

I haven’t heard from SLO yet… safe to assume I’m WL or rejected?

Based on my stats and acceptances to UC’s already… was hoping/expecting Cal Poly to be a safety

Chemistry Major
GPA 4.0 UW
GPA 4.4 Weighted
8 AP classes (scoring all 5)
Average extracurriculars (nothing outstanding)

Accepted: UC Davis, UCSB, UCSD, UCI (Regent’s Scholarship and CHC)
Pending: UCLA, UCB

SLO is not a safety for any applicant.
You have some great options so best of luck.

I didn’t see any Industrial engineering in this topic. Does that mean there is a chance it is still rolling out? Anyone got in to Industrial?

At my son’s school less than a dozen kids have heard back from Cal Poly. This is a graduating class of 350 kids at a large public high school in So Cal.

Kids were talking today that it was odd. Seems odd to me, but what do I know?

I agree. Comparing the threads from last year, there were a lot more responses so either people are not responding here (maybe on Reddit) or not many have been admitted yet? Hopeful thinking.

Any idea if decisions have gone out for bio majors yet?

My daughter is a National Merit Scholar (just found out today), 4.5 weighted gpa, 4.0 unweighted, all 5’s and one 4 on AP exams with classes like AP Physics, AP Bio, AP Chem, etc., 1570 SAT (took only once), tons of leadership, extracurriculars, volunteering with underserved and developmentally disabled youth, etc.

So far, she’s been accepted to WashU, LMU Honors Program (with merit scholarships), UC Davis, UCSD (with Regents Scholarship), and UCSB…and she still hasn’t heard anything from Cal Poly SLO. We’re ok with whatever the response is but it’s just so strange. Guessing waitlist or rejected at this point but…

Thoughts?

Hoping there’s another round-not sure the delay.

My daughter’s friend was accepted for Bio last week.

Yes, a couple posted here.

We are also waiting to hear from this major. I have not seen anyone accepted to this program yet. Fingers crossed

FWIW, the SLO Class threads have had its share of SLO applicants either waitlisted or rejected, yet accepted to Cal, UCLA and/or Stanford.

But as mentioned above, some acceptances may still trickle out this week.

Your daughter has several wonderful schools to consider, which is awesome for her and your family.

SLO’s admission process seems very random, especially given the very limited information on the application. Many students each year are admitted to much better schools yet rejected by SLO. Same thing happened to both of my kids. We’re likely to skip SLO for our third child – doesn’t seem like a good use of $70.

I’m very suspicious that they are engaging in some sort of yield protection. Our high school students are seeing very unusual acceptances and no response (presumed WL).

High stat kids not receiving a notification and lower stat kids (lower gpa and lower rigor) getting accepted even within same major??

Doesn’t make sense

My daughter was accepted (Mechanical Engineering) Friday, but my son, 2 years ago was rejected. He had good UC acceptances and is at SB.
So yes, SLO is a bit of a wildcard it seems. The number of times I have seen a kid accepted to Stanford, or Princeton, or Cal, and get rejected at SLO are too numerous to list.

I should add my son applied Psychology and that year (2023) the acceptance rate for that major was 2%, so it was a tough get for anyone.
