Cal Poly SLO Class of 2029 Freshman Discussion Thread

True. But they do not follow a common format making comparisons difficult. UC Davis has a $4k health insurance included but I am not sure about SLO. I would venture to say SLO is only slightly cheaper because of lower cost of living.

Sorry for this continued nitpicking of CP SLO’s recommended coursework (which is itself nitpicky), but I have a Situation:

My D26 took Algebra 1, Geometry, and Spanish during 7th and 8th grades. The Spanish is in fact credited on her high school transcript, but the math does not appear. As for HS math, in 9th grade she took Intermediate Algebra/Algebra 2HA/Algebra 2HB (they are on trimesters), 10th was Pre-Calc H-A/Pre-Calc H-B/Math Analysis, and this year (11th) is all Calc BC. She’s not taking math senior year because her interests have pivoted to history/poli sci; she will, however, take stats at a community college this summer.

My question is, should I formally try to get the middle school math credit added to her HS transcript (I have no idea if this is possible), or will it be sufficient to just list it on the CP SLO application? It’s the difference between 4 and 6 years of math, so it’s pretty significant. Thanks!

My daughter‘s middle school math and foreign language credits and were automatically on her transcript. This is definitely a question for her HS counselor.

My daughter’s middle school math class was not on her transcript. It was listed under 8th grade coursework on the application. She was admitted.

Thank you; I’ve never communicated with her counselor so I hadn’t thought of that. I just sent an email to her with my inquiry.

My daughter took Math 1 in 8th grade and was it was not on her transcript. She took math 2 freshman year. We listed math 1 under 8th grade coursework and she got credit for 5 years of math because she followed the sequence. She also took Spanish 1 and 2 in middle school which we listed under 7 and 8th grade coursework. I believe they get credit if they keep the middle school sequence going. Not sure if the Spanish counted as she started French freshman year

Middle school Math and Foreign language courses are not required to be listed on the HS transcript but just listed on the CSU application. SLO does not automatically assume that if the student started HS 9th grade in Algebra 2, that they took Algebra and Geometry in Middle school, they just want it listed for the Math or FL progression.

My son didn’t realize he was supposed to include his 8th grade classes, He took Algebra 1 honors and Spanish 1 which I now understand should have been included in his application. I figured this out yesterday when I asked him.

Is it worth Appealing?

The appeal form states that mistakes on application are not an accepted basis and shouldn’t be included in the appeal.

Would an appeal be stronger with this mentioned or without it mentioned? Other things he plans to highlight in his appeal are his desire to go to SLO, his ECs and continued involvement and relation to his major (noting special here unfortunately), strong academics and work ethic.

Instructions on the CSU application guide and specifically SLO’s First year application guide make it pretty obvious that the Middle school courses for Math and FL need to be reported.

SLO First year application information: Application Guide for First-Year | Cal Poly

Seventh and/or Eighth Grade Course Work

  • Enter your seventh and/or eighth grade course work for mathematics, language other than English, or additional A-G course work if you were given high school credit for the course on your transcript. In order to receive consideration, the same course cannot be repeated in ninth grade; you must continue on in the course progression. For example, if you take Algebra 1 in eighth grade, you must take Geometry in ninth grade in order to use that Algebra course. You will need to enter this course work and grade in either the seventh or eighth grade section.

CSU application guide:

If there are other compelling reasons for an appeal, then go ahead and submit, but this error alone is not a good basis for appealing his decision.

thank you for the response and I don’t disagree that it is obvious.

I asked him if he had done it and he said no because “it was confusing on how to do it and his friends couldn’t figure it out either”

It then took me 10 seconds on the internet to figure out how to do it, so frustrated parent moment. I try not to helicopter and let him do him for better or worse.

He asked me if he should put that on the appeal? What is your opinion? I told him he might as well and characterize it as missing information rather than a mistake. I am now conflicted and maybe it is better left off?

Rejected from CalPoly with a 3.95 cummulative unweighted GPA and an associate’s degree

He could mention that he missed putting in those classes. I do not think it will move the needle towards an approval unless there are other compelling reasons listed in the appeal.

So I have one at CP and one at Berkeley. Both class of 2023. So my comparison is straight across the board. Cal cost has been $37K but they live in the greek house so cost of living is significantly cheaper then most pay in Berkeley because they only pay for 10 mos and have a cook for 2 meals/day 5 days of the week. My CP student’s cost have been $32.5K with a 12 mos lease off campus and they get CALFresh benefits towards food costs of $292/mo (most non freshmen at CP qualify based on major for benefits). Education wise both are exceptional schools and have zero regrets for where they are. Both had options at both schools and this is where they landed.

Btw FWIW, both mine had 6 years of math, 4 LOTE, 4 science, one had 4 years of English and the other had 8 years of English, and 6 years social science.

Call Cal Poly admissions and they will explain the procedure for including qualifying middle school math classes on the application. They talked us through this part as it was not at all obvious how to do this. The middle school math classes need not be added to your kid’s HS transcript since those classes can be assumed based in where they began the math sequence in grade 9.

Super helpful, thank you! My D25 was accepted to Cal Poly and my D27 is considering applying in a couple years. She took Integrated IH and Spanish 1 in her 8th grade year and I now know that she needs to include both of those when completing the application.

Is anyone still “Awaiting Decision”?

Yes, we are. Not sure what wave is going to be next.

Thank you; the feedback seems to be consistent here: although the middle school math is not reflected on the HS transcript, they can still be counted toward the five recommended years of math.
At some point, I’ll call admissions to confirm.
In addition to the stats this summer, DS26 is now considering taking a CC English course to get to the five recommended years of English
 good god!!

Best of luck! Hopefully the extra class can be in an area of demonstrated interest. That will definitely help, no matter where your child ends up.
