Cal Poly SLO Class of 2029 Freshman Discussion Thread

The reddit post for that says posted 4 days ago so that would have been Friday.

I thought all applicants would receive their decision by 1 April? Any others still awaiting decision?

There are some Reddit posters that are still waiting for a decision (Freshman and Transfers). I would contact admissions and ask since their decision notifications have not gone this late before.

To follow up, yesterday the registrar at my D26’s school added her Geometry from 8th grade as a note on her HS transcript. Ideally, I’d like her 7th grade Algebra 1 to be included in that note as well, but 1) the consensus here is that these classes need only be listed on the application and don’t have to be on the transcript (since D26 started with Alg 2 in 9th, I guess the implication is that she completed Alg 1 in middle school, and 2) D26 says the registrar is a real “witch” and hates kids  so I don’t want to nag her again.

My son is still waiting for decision as of April 2nd. He emailed admission but didn’t hear anything back.

He could try texting admissions. Admissions seem to be more responsive with text messaging.

Thank you for the info. He texted yesterday but didn’t hear yet. We need to narrow down now so it’s stressful.

I understand and it is very unusual to not have a decision by now.

This is very frustrating. I really urgently need to make my college plans, and it’s really annoying that SLO which, despite having 5 months and no essays to read, is late on admissions. It must be hectic at the AO. Hoping I get my decision ASAP since the clock is ticking for me.

Just got in for Computer Engineering (My alternate major vs Mechanical) as international!! I was genuinely so anxious for this.

4.25 CSU, 4.32 W GPA, 3.86 UNW, Salutatorian of my HS, 10 AP Classes (two 4s and five 5’s, 3 more exams to take this year) + Calc 2 and Calc 3 at community college. 16-20 hours of EC’s a week and an average of 6-10 work hours in the past 36 months. I come from a low income school which may have helped my decision.

Interestly, mechanical has a twice as high acceptance rate than computer engineering. Maybe the international quotas were a bit skewed? I’m still happy though! I might try to dual major/minor/get a masters with mechanical to get a mechatronics specialty, since that has generally been my end goal.

When did you hear?

Just earlier today. Just stalk your email and I would expect it very soon.

Were you on the waitlist before or you had not received any decision yet?

Didn’t receive any decision. I don’t think wait list decisions start to come out for a while.

Did anyone go to the Open House (admitted students day) last weekend? The Ag School did such a good job. It has my student questioning prior choices and was the first time we looked at CPSLO. Any feedback positive or negative?

I was very impressed with Friday’s school presentations by faculty and students. We are CAFES also. (My student already was decided) The deep connections with industry and being prepared for jobs on day one after graduation focus, faculty seemed very student success focused , classes seem very real-life based - and they had students doing almost everything to run the Friday events (serving us lunch, escorting us to classrooms, opening remarks at stadium welcome) which showed the learning by doing in action - a good fit for my son.

My husband and son went, and my husband was super impressed. They went to 4 schools last weekend, and SLO had not been on his list really at all. But after the event he was really into the idea of considering it. They did a great job, and the students all seemed so happy to be there. Son was Bailey College of Science and Math. The biggest question for us though, is whether it is the right fit for someone who wants to go on to grad school for science. It seemed very focused on career preparation.

FWIW, D21’s major and concentration flowchart was specifically designed for grad programs.

Her plan is to take a gap year after graduation and apply to grad schools.

We went to all three days, starting with a housing tour on Thursday and the Farmers Market which was so fun. We were really impressed and so glad we went. We had been to two other admitted student functions including one at a very pricey private school. The showcase and welcome Cal Poly put on could not have been executed any better. I never expected such intimate and plentiful opportunities to connect with the administration, faculty and other students. We were part of the CAED College and my kid is thrilled. The mixer they had for the students on Friday night was an amazing way for my son to know that he will find his people among this class of students next year. Well done Cal Poly SLO!

We attended Open House as well and thought it was fantastic - very well organized and provided so much direct connections with administrative staff, professors, and students. I wish we had stayed for the events on Saturday - I didn’t realize they’d have as much going on as they did. My daughter committed - she will be an applied math major in the Bailey College of Science and Math. The only disappointing element is that the program does not have much in the way of internship connections. This is a weakness according to the department chair.
