Can anyone comment on the quality of LVC's actuarial summer program?

Hi,

I’m a junior in HS. I found out about Lebanon Valley College’s 5-day [url = <a href=“http://www.lvc.edu/academics/summer-community-programming/actuarial-science-camp/%5Dactuarial”>http://www.lvc.edu/academics/summer-community-programming/actuarial-science-camp/]actuarial summer program recently from a high school newsletter. I’m not sure if I should attend. I have a pretty strong math background, but I don’t know that much about probability/stats which is why I’m interested in this. I also liked that the application process was selective, as it required me to provide a reference and write a 500-word essay explaining why I want to go to the program.

If I go, however, I would have to drop another 5-day camp that runs at precisely the same time, a [url = <a href=“http://www.liu.edu/honors%5Dfree”>http://www.liu.edu/honors]free LIU Creative Writing camp. I like creative writing, but I’m already taking a different 10-day creative writing camp before that. Still, however, it seems like a shame to pass up a free camp to pay $900 for another one.

Does anyone know how good LVC’s summer program is? I heard LVC is a very strong college for actuaries, with near 100% graduation rate, so I imagine their program for high school students would be great as well. I hope, though, that they make use of sufficiently advanced math; I don’t want to be doing simple interest computations and feel like I’m in 8th grade again.

Also, would getting into LVC be more impressive for colleges, since there’s a more thorough application process in contrast to LIU’s program?

I’m also a junior and have pretty much the same background as you. I’m going to the camp this summer. In terms of choosing between those camps, it really comes down to what you want to do in college. If you stick with math or stats, LVC will look much more impressive. If you’re planning on majoring in English/writing, then stick with the LIU camp. LVC camp does look good because most kids our age have no idea what an actuary even is, so it shows that you’ve done your research and are a good college candidate.

Really? That’s great, I was half-expecting to get a cynical ‘no’ on this forum. I am definitely planning in majoring in math/stats. How do you know it would look much more impressive? (Although LVC looks like a very good school, this actuarial program was the first I heard of it.) Can anyone else familiar with college admissions chime in too?
