I just spoke with someone renting their apt at 1280 West for $1150- large one bedroom. They don’t have washer/dryers in the units. GA2012- Is this area safe for a single young woman commuting to 1201 Peachtree Street?

Peaceful, your daughter may need to make some compromises here. If she wants an apartment that has washer and dryer in her unit, she may have to pay more…or commute.

As safe as it can be for a metro area, upscale hotels right around the corner on 14th, a Four Seasons and a few others. Also a little side street with restaurants and bars that is very popular with the professional 20’s crowd.

Thumper- She is willing to pay more. The challenge seems to be in not understanding the streets and the neighborhoods. She may very well be willing to not have a washer/dryer in the unit if the building feels safe. We live in Boston and understand all of the nuances of our neighborhoods. Apparently downtown Atlanta is equally as nuanced, but we don’t know it and neither of us is in the area now. She will be back in Atlanta on Tuesday evening and can spend foot time looking. I’m just reaching out to CC because everyone here is so knowledgable!

I think it would be great to live in Virginia Highlands. Lots of young professionals there. City Data. com on the Atlanta forum is really a great resource for specifics on midtown, etc. Lots of young people posting there who actually live and/or have relocated to ATL. Most of midtown is safe, there are always car break ins every where.

The 1280 West building has gated garage parking. I am thinking there is a dry cleaners and a couple of shops in the lobby area as well.

Peacefulmom,
The hottest places for young professionals right now are the Inman Park/Virginia Highlands/Poncey Highlands area, the Westside, and Brookhaven. Buckhead is a little " snootier," IMO. She should consider staying in a Residence Inn for a week or so and look around to find what she wants.

Is she rents at Post Gardens (which is Buckhead, near Lenox Mall) she can take MARTA to Midtown.

I was visiting DS in Boston last month and I was very impressed by the public transportation which allows so many living and commuting options. No wonder you are frustrated with Atlanta! But, there are some rail lines that seem to go to the midtown area. Would somewhere along one of the lines, like jym suggests, be an option?

My DD attended a summer program at Atlanta Ballet (old studios on Peachtree I believe) several years ago and lived at the SCAD dorms. My opinion of the immediate area was very good and I felt safe walking around and felt safe knowing she was walking around the area when we were not with her. It is a quiet area and, as a previous poster stated, populated with a lot of restaurants and clubs (and Atlantic Station just a stone’s throw away).

It was also a decent walk to Piedmont Park from that general area. My DD and her friends did that walk often as it was the closest public pool. She said parts of the walk are…ehhh…but not nearly as bad as most other areas of the city. I cannot recommend specific apartments in that area of the world but the immediate neighborhood seemed good enough to me (although I would not go too far past the subway station in the direction past SCAD).

FWIW, I don’t blame your DD for not wanting to commute from outside of the city. After, summers in NYC and Atlanta for my DD (and driving the commute in and out of both a few times) and then a couple of years in Philly I am more than happy to escape that traffic and cannot imagine how people do those commutes every single day.
And the subway in Atlanta is not very safe at all. Not to mention it is not as easily navigable as in other cities IMO.

I would also recommend the Non-Tourist’s Guide to Atlanta. This was recommended to me by some CC’ers when my DD first went to Atlanta and it has a lot of good info.

Don’t believe anyone is suggesting she look “outside the city”. All of the recommendations are inside the city, and definitely ITP (inside the perimeter).

I ran into some friends of my S#2’s yesterday at our neighborhood holiday party. These friends attended schools downtown (Tech and GA State). I asked them about Atlantic station- if it was better than it had been. Its beautiful, but there had been some crime issues in the housing area. They commented that a friend used to park his car in the parking decks at Atlantic station as it was the cheapest 24 hr parking, when he was don there for activities with his friends at tech and such. And his car handle was jimmied on more than one occasion. Just to mention.

My DS spent a summer at Tech. Same happened to him in the Tech parking deck. But he never had any personal safety issues.

I can’t thank you all enough. CC is the best!

She does not want to take public transportation in Atlanta mostly because her hours could go late and she has parking for free in her office. Her goal is to avoid a long car commute and ideally to walk. It sounds like Virginia Highlands is a great option for her to explore. She plans to look at an apt at The Windsor in Midtown and the condos across the street Mayfair. She will also look at 1280 and open her search to Virginia Highlands.

Safety is her primary concern. Secondly is her desire to walk to work or to have a very very short commute by car. This is her first job after college and she wants her living situation to be as non-stressful and convenient as possible. She understands that she may need to pay a premium her first year until she has a sense of the neighborhoods.

jym, thank you for your many suggestions and thanks to ALL of you. Your suggestions to city guides, apts and websites are invaluable to me and my daughter…

Here’s an interactive map of Va-Hi and environs.http://www.virginiahighland.com/map.html All of these are a 5-10 minute drive at most to midtown.

Parking can sometimes be challenging in Va-Hi (Fri/Sat nite) if where she rents does not have parking. Personally, when my DS looked, he chose Inman park over Va- Hi and loved it.

jym- she is now strongly considering Virginia Highlands. can you or anyone else recommend specific apartment buildings? i think she would consider inman park too. i finally understand the area- woohoo! a college friend has expressed interest in living with her in this location as well a wonderful cc parent has connected her with her daughter who is looking for a roommate and living in the area. i hadn’t realized just how close this was to her work.

everyone- thank you for your help and please keep the suggestions coming!

I’m a little surprised by all the comments about Midtown and Marta not being safe. I live in Midtown and walk everywhere, day and night. I have never had a problem. Car breakins are a big problem, so gated parking is key to me. Other than that, my daughters and I all use Marta for the airport and for my younger D’s job. Just use common sense - don’t have your phone in your hand. Don’t ride alone late at night. Be aware of your surroundings. Walk/ride with confidence. These are true in any city or town.

That said, the GATech area has had a number of breakins and robberies, but again, use common sense. In most cases they were after phones because people were walking while texting or talking and distracted, or left valuables in parked cars. VA Highlands is a great area, but she is less likely to find secured parking there. Most apartment complexes and condos have gated parking, so that is the route I would pursue. The Arts Center Marta station is the closest to the location you want, rather than the Midown station. She has enough budget to get a condo rental in Midtown, and those are more likely to have the washer/dryer she wants.

I was hoping I could join this discussion as I am also in desperate great need of advice about moving to Atlanta. My son just graduated and will be beginning a job in Buckhead. This looks like a different area than where Peaceful Mom’s daughter will be working. I know nothing about Atlanta and will be planning a 1-2 day trip to find an apartment. He thinks he wants an apartment that is walking distance to his office, but I don’t know if that is a good place for a young single person to live. He doesn’t know anyone in Atlanta so will be looking for areas conducive to meeting young people. I have been looking on line at Inman Park and Virginia Highland based on the suggesions above, but they look like a commute to Buckhead. Any specifics on particular buildings in Buckhead would also be much appreicated as well.

MomofaGandB- I know a ton about Buckhead. PM me if you want. My D can speak with you or your son. A couple of questions. Where will he be working–exact address so I can figure out walking? What type of college did he go to (city/suburbs) and what kinds of things is he interested in. Does he want to live in a neighborhood or a gated community? Will he be working by Emory? My D will know where the single young people live in Buckhead and can help a lot.

Buckhead is not cheap. And he will want to decide if he wants things walkable. There are great apartments behind Phipps Plaza that are very popular (another Post property- very high end) that is walkable to a lot. There are options on Lenox Rd and closer to Emory, but another very poplar area is Brookhaven and there is a MARTA station right there.

any thoughts on this apt:
AMLI Old Fourth Ward

They have availability! Thanks so much!

Update-- A friend of my daughters just landed a job in Atlanta and she now has a roommate and won’t be living alone. They put down a deposit on an apartment in Virginia Highlands. It is a much shorter commute to her work (not walking distance:( ) than Buckhead and she says the neighborhood is great.

Thank you all so very much! Your advice was invaluable!
