I think you have a pretty good shot at getting in…what are your extracurriculars like?

To answer your other questions:

I don’t know that it’s an ABSOLUTE necessity as a freshman when you have a meal plan. But if you want to go out or to the store or whatever, yes…there’s NOTHING on campus. The “marketplace” is way overpriced and they don’t carry much. Bring a car if you can, it’ll make your life WAY easier.

ASI (Associated Students, Inc.) and ResLife try very hard to give residential students (and even non-res, they don’t really care who comes) stuff to do on weekends. They have a lot of trips and stuff that are very reasonably priced.

My favorite thing they do are the “Scene It” movie nights…they get movies that are out of theaters but aren’t out on DVD yet and show them on Saturday nights for free.

I love SSU. It’s not a party school, and it’s definitely a school that you get out of what you put in.

There’s more and more to do in Rohnert Park all the time. They just put in a new indoor go-kart rink, with an arcade, mini cosmic bowling, and (I believe) laser tag. There’s also mini-golf, lots of places to eat, etc. Basically, once you establish your group of friends, you’ll have lots to do.

Pluses: The faculty. We have professors who used to teach at Berkeley and Stanford, but don’t want to do research anymore, so they come teach at SSU.

The staff. Maintenance, customer services, and police services are all extremely friendly.

The campus. SSU is absolutely gorgeous.

Minuses: we are being KILLED by the budget crisis. They’re cutting classes and imposing unit caps. And every professor must take so many (I believe it’s 9) unpaid furlough days per semester (meaning they can’t work/teach on those days). Meaning we as students are paying for more but getting less.
