Hey y’all,
I have just finished my first ever semester in high school! However, my gpa was not exactly the best 
For first semester, my gpa is at a 4.42. I take five honors courses and got a B in two (very mad cause one was at an 89.5). If I continue this path will it ultimately lead me to not being able to get into uiuc engineering, northwestern, or uchicago? I am very positive ill only end with one B next semester, which would make my cummalitive gpa 4.5. But what do you guys think?
Every high school calculates weighted GPA differently, so colleges won’t take this at face value. They will look at the grades on your transcript in the context of your school. Some schools recalculate GPAs using their own methods.
If you get two Bs every semester for the rest of your high school career, your grades would be somewhat lower than what top schools usually seek out, unless your high school is unusually challenging. If you improve your grades, you should be fine in the sense that you won’t be rejected for low grades. Right now you’ve just finished your first semester, so I wouldn’t worry about anything.
As long as you apply yourself and get the highest grades possible to YOU you shouldn’t worry about hurting your chances at top schools. @halcyonheather is right when they say that your grades might be a little lower than competitive, but if you work the application and present yourself in a great light, you should still be able to get into a great college.
Bottom line is: college is college. A degree from a prestigious school may look good on a job application, but success will ultimately be up to you. You seem like a good student, you shouldn’t stress about where you will end up.
