So heres the story I plan on going to college next year when I turn 17, my parents are okay with it as long as I go to a college close to home, which I don’t really want to (most likely I want to go out of state or a univerist that’s 3 hours away). So when I told them this let me tell you they were not having it at all now they just say you either go to this college or don’t go at all. So what I am wondering is can I just go I know my friends could drive me to my college, also fasfa is not a problem I already applied for it and my parents are not paying for my college, so all I have to do is wait till I get accepted
??? How are you going to pay for college if your parents won’t? You can’t just declare yourself independent.
Fasfa is helping by alot since my family is low income and I know some relatives who will help pay
Sorry, but FAFSA is a form you submit in your senior year. It’s not an organization that will help you out financially, and your parents’ financial information has to be included. https://fafsa.ed.gov/
I suggest you talk to a guidance counselor at your school so you have an understanding of how this actually works.
You can begin college at 17 (I did) but may want to be open to your parents suggestions. It sounds as though you will be pretty dependent on other people to go farther away and family may be more reliable in the long run.
Under the circumstances that you graduated from High School, then, yes you can go to college at 17.
There may come complications though if you’re looking to do it all by yourself at 17 because of financial properties to college. You would have to speak to your loan officer about who will co-sign your loans (Since you are not 18 yet/Not legally allowed to sign a loan for yourself). There are all kinds of ways that the law can take you and under a certain situation, you may be able to sign yourself a loan (Although I don’t advise managing your funding yourself).
Best bet would be to find a FAMILY member to help you with this process or wait until you are 18 where you are legally able to do this independently.
Good luck man.
Yes I know how fasfa works and I already filled it out with my parents financial information, and I am in my senior year I’m 16 now turn 17 next year
Why do you ahve to go college at age 17?
My sister is 18 and I was wondering if she could co sign BTW she wanted to go college far away to but my parents made her stay close to home, she’s gotten over the fact now because now she just wants to try to graduate
Paul2752 because I really want to
OOS will be expensive. Your family can pay a lot? Or are you living with family and commuting?
What did you want your sister to cosign?
I mean my parents know where I wanna go, but if I went and they called the caps or something like that, would they bring me back home?
What’s your EFC?
She can’t cosign if she doesn’t have a sizable income. You really really need to know how FA works.
Like others say, FAFSA WILL need your parents income info and your income info as well (if you work), and they are going to determine how much THEY think you need. Lots of people assume colleges/FAFSA will award what the families think they need, but that’s not true.
Gearmon ik out of state is alot that’s why is my second choice plus they offer a really good program of what I want. I want to live on campus my family is low income but I know some of my relatives that would help me
@Moonlightsun You need to sit down and have a conversation. No out of state school is worth that level of drama and destruction of your relationship with your family.
Paul2752 I have an idea of how fasfa works because my sister went through it, but I’ll read up some more on it. And my parents gave me consent to fill it out with their information
Gearmon you can’t believe how many times I have tried they just won’t listen that’s why I also consider a university that’s 3 hours away
@Moonlightsun Consider taking a gap year and working. Save your money. Your parents would probably feel more comfortable with you on your own at age 18.
Gearmon I have considered a gap year but I’m the type of person who will probably regret doing that and also I tried to get a job but my parents wouldn’t let me
