Title. I’m also taking math aa SL. I’m not taking Physics or CS. I initially wanted to do medicine in UK but am unsure about it now so want to check if I can apply to US as a CS major, and if this would hamper my chances. I’m in junior year currently.
If this screen name is your real name, I would urge you to change it asap. Here is how.
For CS, whether in the US or UK, Math AA SL is suboptimal compared to AA/AI HL but okay since it includes plenty of Calculus.
It’ll mostly impact where you apply since many colleges are simply overflowing with too many CS applicants.
Obviously, Math HL+ Physics + CS + Digital society + Language A + Language B or ab initio would be better.
My recommendation would be to apply to CS+ x programs, Computing, Data Science, Bioinformatics, IST… rather than straight CS, which tends to be the most competitive major there is AND is often in College of engineering, which requires Physics.
Did your school year start in september or does it start in March?
Thanks for the detailed response. I really appreciate it. My school year starts in September, I’m nearly done with my junior year.
Ok, so there’s no changing subjects anyway.
I will confirm applying for Data science (etc, ^) would be better for you then.
If you don’t need Financial aid, look into easily overlooked universities such as Cal Polys and more residential CSUs (like Chico, which has a solid Honors program), WWU, Utah, plus all the Big10 flagship programs.
IB math AA SL is enough to be prepared for calculus in university. CS in university typically has entry points for no experience versus some experience. Physics in university may recommend high school physics (not necessarily IB SL or HL level) as a prerequisite.
