So I missed a presentation for my English class one day, and now, I’m expected to come into class tomorrow to make up for it. However, one other student had also missed her presentation (and I remember it because I presented on a different topic that day and she was supposed to present after me), and she didn’t have to make up for it. Moreover, in the first week of class, because we didn’t have our books yet, two students missed their presentations, but didn’t have to make up for them at all. Can I report this to the Deans or will the school just side with the professor?
Worry about yourself not other people. Seems reasonable that you have to make up work missed, is it not? Accept responsibility for yourself and your work.
Perhaps the other student has extenuating circumstances you are unaware of. Another student’s work isn’t any of your business, really.
Okay. Here’s the thing. Every time that we miss a presentation (unless we’re short on time), our presentations would usually slide into the following week. However, that week led into Spring Break and she missed class that day, which meant she didn’t present. I could also say the same thing about the presentation that I missed that one day.
And I agree, it’s none of my business, but when the professor treats students unfairly, demanding that they make up for an assignment while another student doesn’t have to, then that becomes an issue. My relative died and I still have to come into class to make up for it.
“It’s none of my business” is where your paragraph should have ended. You don’t even have any right to know what happened with those students, or why. Do a good job on your own work.
Gee. Just make up the presentation and be glad you didn’t get a zero. Some professors are that difficult to work with that they wouldn’t allow the make up opportunity- even for a funeral. Count your blessings and move on. Sorry about your relative’s death. The semester will be over soon so hang in there.
That is so great that your professor allows you to make up missed work! The professor isn’t really making you make up your presentation (as you could always refuse, right?) – he is giving you an opportunity to improve your grade.
Have you spoken to the other students about the arrangements they have made with the professor? Maybe they turned down the opportunity that you have been given.
Thanks for the comments everyone. It has really made me see this issue from a different side. I did make arrangements with the professor (to write a paper instead and I did), but then he changes his mind last minute and told me that I must come into class to make a presentation. I am thankful that I still have the opportunity to make up the points.
“So I missed a presentation for my English class one day, and now, I’m expected to come into class tomorrow to make up for it.”
Duh! Would you prefer to get a 0 for that part of the class?
“Can I report this to the Deans or will the school just side with the professor?”
You can report it. They will be annoyed with you and will side with the professor. The professor will be annoyed with you, maximizing your chances of getting a 0 for this part of the class.
A lesson about university: You actually need to do your work. Complaining is not an adequate substitute.
Seems to be that the prof. is doing you a favor by allowing you to make-up a missed presentation. Say thank you, show up tomorrow, and do your presentation.
You have no ideal about the details of other people’s situations so don’t concern yourself with anyone’s presentation schedule but your own. I would absolutely not report it to the Dean.
And sometimes life isn’t perfectly fair – and the sooner you get over it the better.
Surely there is no problem making up a missed presentation. You would have it prepared for the scheduled date except for intervening circumstances. You received a gift when you were allowed to make up the presentation without penalty.
