Can USABO Prep be considered an EC?

If I’m a USABO Finalist and in order to become that I need to study a lot. Could I write USABO Prep time on my college app and label it as one of my ECs? This would be a lot of time and so I was wondering If it counted as an extracurricular?

Sorry I don’t have an answer for that - but I have a similar question: Does self-studying an AP course count as an EC? After all, it’s technically not a part of your curriculum.

Well self studying a course is temporary while USABO is all through your high school career.

If an entire year is “temporary”, four years would be too - everything that you haven’t done for the majority of your life would be “temporary”

No, an EC is something that you should show commitment. Will 1 year show commitment? No. Will 4 years? Absolutely.

Can someone answer my question please.

No. Don’t list it as an EC, that just looks like you’re trying to fill up your application.
When you mention that you were a USABO finalist in your awards section, they’ll know it took a lot of studying to get there, so there’s no need to add it in your activities section.

Okay, thanks for the answer. If I start a USABO club at my school, then can I add it to my EC section?

If you start a USABO club? Well sure, if you take it that far then it’s an activity, but I don’t see how you could have so many students in your school competing successfully in the USABO, that it warrants a club

I suppose you could list it as an extracurricular if you made a USABO club, but if it was all individual then it is better to just list it as an honor/award (depending on how far you advance in USABO - Semifinalist, Top 20 Finalist, National Finals Medalist, IBO, etc.) on your college app than counting it as an extracurricular.
