My roommate is Aerospace E and does no work, which really pisses me off. Can you get by in engineering without doing any work? I’m a psych major and I seem to do 100x the amount of work he does.
Are you a freshman? A lot of freshman/intro level college classes have material covered in advanced HS courses.
Or… for all you know, your roommate could flunk out.
@PrimeMeridian agreed. I actually am sophomore, and I know my roommate is in ENG2XX classes.
How are you so sure of the amount of work he does or doesn’t do?
@bodangles good point, it is a hunch. But he is in the room 90% of the day playing videogames, and I am making an inference. I could be wrong.

Maybe you should mention your concerns to the RA…
@PrimeMeridian that is a good point. IN ADDITION, AN ADDENDUM: I do not want him to suffer whatsoever, and I did not think this was too much of an issue. In hindsight, maybe I missed something obvious.
Maybe he is so brilliant that he doesn’t need to put any effort.
I didn’t suggest informing the RA to get your roommate in trouble-- college isn’t boarding school. I suggested it to get some help/support for your roommate.
Maybe you should talk to your roommate and just ask him if he has a problem.
@PrimeMeridian yeah, I understand your concern. The reason I wrote that is because the tone of my post was a very nasty one, especially when juxtaposed with the fact that he could have an issue. I think my addendum was just plain confusing, didn’t mean for that.
I think this entire thread is hilarious that a psych major is complaining that he has to do more work than an engineer.
How dare he play videogames all day, in my presence.
Either he is:
- Doing homework somewhere else
- Not doing any homework (not because it isn’t assigned but he is blowing it off)
- A genius who does it quickly
@OhSorryYo lol, sorry I do more work than him and, apparently, you as well.
Yeah, because I graduated and don’t have to deal with this petty sophomore drama anymore. Keep working hard, you’ll grow up and graduate one day. In the meantime, your roommate probably doesn’t give a second thought about you
Your roommate could be a total genius.
OR (and this one is more likely given the odds in the general population) he could be just totally slacking off & relishing in his newfound freedom away from Mom and Dad that he’s decided to goof off for the first X number of weeks of the semester…until he gets his midterm grades and panics.
Just focus on your own classes, major, readings, assignments. You’ll be the one with the last laugh when the first semester grades come out and you have a good GPA and he’s on academic probation.
Wow… if it was my kid at college with a serious problem, I’d hope his roommate would care enough to notice and ask, “hey man, u OK?”, and not just laugh at him.
I find the idea of going to the RA about this kind of laughable. OP, just leave it alone and focus on yourself. It really is none of your business.
@OhSorryYo I see you trolling, you hating. I’ll be graduating with honors, don’t worry.
@danfer91 it can get distracting.
Your perception that he isn’t working as hard as you is distracting? That sounds like an issue with you, not him. If it’s the video games that are distracting you can always work at the library, at a cafe, with headphones in, etc. Really, this shouldn’t be an issue at all. I mean, what kind of advice are you even looking for here with something this miniscule? Do you just want a virtual high five for being so studious?
