Can you do a convincing South Carolina dialect?

Hi,

I just finished my college audition process, and now I’m back to performing in high school. Right now, I’m working on an Oral Interpretation piece from the Secret Life of Bees. I don’t live in the States, so it’s hard to find someone who can teach me the accent.

If anyone is willing to help me out, please send me a message!

Thanks!

You might want to get a Southern American dialect cd. I ordered one years ago from the Drama Book Shop but I couldn’t find it. There is one on Amazon.com available from a 3rd party seller for $21.95. Good luck!

thanks sandkmom, i’ll take a look!

There are actually several distinct regional accents within that one state, but here’s a good place to start … [IDEA - Dialects of South Carolina](http://web.ku.edu/~idea/northamerica/usa/southcarolina/southcarolina.htm)

You might also want to find some speeches by South Carolina politicians on YouTube. There’s a lot of stuff from Fox News with Linsey Graham who provides a pretty good example of the speech patterns of someone from the middle of the state. If you can find anything with Fritz Hollings, that’s a classic example of the Charleston accent. Also check out some old videos of Susan Smith for an example of a white female from the “upstate.”

There was also a movie made of that book – I would hope that the actors did their research and that the accents were authentic. You might be able to find a DVD and check it out.
