Hi, there. I don’t post on this thread much, but read it. I’m active on the theater threads as that is what my daughter is going to school for.
I wanted to see if anyone has experience with Geico auto insurance and if you like it? Our rates are really high with Liberty Mutual and they just went up. I ran a quote through Geico for the exact same coverage and it was much, much less $. But I would love to hear others’ experiences with it. Want to be sure if we call roadside assistance, they will be there for instance. And they pay up on claims, etc. Thanks for any info. (or if anyone has other insurance they really like that is reasonable).
We used to be with liberty mutual and switched to progressive. I can’t say how good they are because we haven’t had any accidents knock on wood. They were a lot cheaper than liberty mutual.
Have had GEICO for years…can’t remember our last claim though. Had roadside assistance last week at the beach…they told me 20 minutes, truck arrived in 22 and the driver apologized for being late…would have been 1.5 hours at home.
We have usaa for D and a local insurer for us.
I’ve been with Geico now for about 15 years, and I now have a first-accident forgiveness for being a loyal customer and being pretty claim-free. That one time I did have an accident, I had no problem with the claim. The claims that I had the most were for windshield cracks and they were all free of service through the third-party Safelite company. Don’t even have to call Geico for these. Do them all online. So convenient.
A couple occasions for emergency roadside service, they always contacted a third-party company right away and sent someone within an hour or at the latest, two hours (and that was being locked out of our car in the Rocky Mountain National Park thanks to my then young son).
Lastly, when I registered my oldest son upon getting his driver’s license and went off to college about 70 miles away from home, our insurance premium suddenly jumped quite a bit. When I called to challenged the amount, the person on the other end of the line decided to drop the premium that actually turned out to be a few dollars below what we used to pay before registering my teenage son! I suppose they do care about a loyal client with clean driving records for a long period.
I could probably tell you more accurately about the company if I had any recent accident claim experiences, but I don’t. The last time I called about combining our auto and home insurance, I was quite displeased with the conversation. They used to have an excellent customer service 10-15 years ago, but I don’t think it’s at the same level today.
Thank you!
I used to work for Liberty so I had cheap rates. When I left them, I went to Geico for several years and was happy with them. I am now back with Liberty. We get a discount because of H’s college affiliation and the rates are decent. I also know most of the attorneys who would defend me if we were sued since they are my former co-workers. My current company doesn’t write auto insurance. I have home owners, motorcycle and an umbrella with LM now.
I would use USAA in a heartbeat if I was eligible.
I am eligible for USAA (but only recently) and they could not match my long term GEICO rates.
thanks all. Much appreciate all the info.
I ditched all USAA policies after 25 years. They are not the old USAA, much worse. Kept raising the rates for no reason. I would have stayed with them forever, out of inertia, but one day they informed us that they decided our house cost an additional 700K to rebuild (in the recession, in the five years since we bought it), which cost about 4K for the policy, with no claims.
We got Armed Forces for homeowners insurance for less than half the price, and Geico for car insurance for about half. Turns out Geico doesn’t upcharge for young drivers. Straightforward, easy to work with, no BS. Kind of like USAA used to be.
We comparison shopped every year for the last several. We have Safeco. It was cheaper, and with better coverage than USAA or Progressive. And WAYYY cheaper than Liberty Mutual.
We had issues with LMutual. They said S was covered and then after he had an accident they said why wasn’t he listed as a named insured, even tho they told us not to! We switched to a small local carrier and have been much happier–no double-talk.
Rates vary a lot state by state and area by area. We had the same experience with LM, a huge rate increase without any reason. We ended up at Progressive , which seems to be better for families with younger drivers. Rate increases so far have been small. You have to shop around every few years because all of the companies count on inertia and will raise rates more on long term customers than on new ones.
Progressive is a bit odd in that they have high list prices and a plethora of discounts, so it is hard to determine what your insurance actually costs sometimes.
Sometimes rate increases or higher rates are because that particular insurance company feels they have too much risk in your area. They are trying to discourage business intentionally in some areas. It makes sense for an insurer to spread their risk geographically due to weather related claims.
All great info. I’m shopping around.
I’m in the process of changing to LM. Tho the car didn’t drop, the house did, by 40%. It’s a big savings. Good to know you shop it annually, thumper.
OP, a lot of how car insur works for you with an accident depends on your state laws.
But if you’re worried about roadside, you could get AAA on the side. Not expensive.
FYI, Safeco is Liberty Mutual since ~2008
Well…Safeco gave us the best coverage…and the best rates.
Safeco was way too high for us. Rates went way up this year. AAA managed to increase our coverage on house, cars, and umbrella and reduce what we were paying significantly. I guess it really depends on the area. We have not had claims in a long time. We left Geico when they wanted to charge a lot extra since I use my car to occasionally visit clients. They wanted to call it a business vehicle like the ones with company names on them. It is not used like that.
