Pizzagirl, thanks. How long does it last?
I would love to use mascara but no matter what kind I try, it ALWAYS come off on the skin under my eyes and looks awful. What am I doing wrong? Is there any way to prevent this?
Put a coat of clear mascara over your mascara to seal it. It shouldn’t flake. Have you tried waterproof mascara?
The BareMinerals light foundation I like is called BareSkin.
I stick with my Chanel mascara whenever I have to use it. Even the non-waterproof version stays put. Most of the time, I use Chanel crayon eyeliner on the “waterline” and skip mascara:
My about 90 second routine:
I wash with Philosopy Purity while in the shower
I apply clinique eye cream
CeraVe moisturizer (SPF 30)
Clinique blush (the new one with 3 colors in 1)
Clinique eye pencil
Clinique mascara, usually lash doubling mascara, but sometimes other, depending on what came in bonus
Bobbi Brown Lipstick
At night I just wash with Purity, apply eye cream, and apply Cerave night time. I usually also use Burts Bees lip balm at night.
For years I used Clinique soap and moisturizer, but I’m branching out and getting cheap.
I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced what I’m thinking is an allergic reaction similar to the following:
I started using retin-A. I used an entire tube, which lasted 3-4 months, with no problem.
At some point while using my second tube, the inside (towards my nose) of my eyelids started getting red, flaky and itchy. I went to dermatologist, and she said use only Dove soap and Cerave for a week, then expand product by product. When I started using retin-A again, I had the same problem. So I stopped using it. But now, maybe two months later, I’m having the same problem.
I guess I’m going to dump my mascara and my eye cream, open new, and see if that helps. Any other ideas? Id love to start using retin A again. Maybe it wasn’t the problem at all.
I am a self-described make-up junkie. My current routine:
Moisturizer on face after shower
Urban Decay Eyelid primer
Benefit the Porefessional Primer on my nose and chin areas
Apply foundation with a Beauty Blender sponge - currently using Laura Mercier Moisture Supreme
Eyes: favorite is currently the Urban Decay Naked2 Basics Palette
Apply the darkest color, Undone (gray/black) as an eye liner using a liner brush
Use the second lightest color, Stark, on my lid/up to the eyebrow
Use a middle color, Cover, in the crease
Blend it all with a blending brush
Curl eyelashes, apply waterproof Maybelline Lash Stiletto mascara
Blush: Clinique in Precious Posy
Lips: Sugar Lip Treatment in Rose
Believe it or not, most of these products are very neutral and understated. My goal is to smooth out my blotchy skintone and highlight my eyes so they don’t disappear. I wear bangs which pretty much cover my eyebrows, if I didn’t, I’d probably do something with them too.
I often use the website MakeupAlley to look at user reviews of various products. It’s kind of like CC for makeup!
Consolation - when I had a makeup client, they recommended Blinc mascara (no, they didn’t make it). It forms tiny tubes. You will need a makeup remover to remove it, can’t just use soap and water. I don’t wear mascara for everyday and when I do it’s Laura Mercier since I like all my cosmetics to come from the same line but Blinc did work.
I had eyelash extensions last year and they were fabulous, but then I developed an allergy to the adhesive. I’m going to try again at some point.
@consolation I just heard about this ‘trick’, tried it and it works to keep mascara in place.
I don’t like the waterproof stuff because it is too hard to take off and I find that it pulls out my lashes. When I really need the stuff to stay put I use two coats of washable mascara and then a final coat of waterproof in the same color. The waterproof layer seals to to the other layers and not my lashes. It all comes off rather easily but stays put when it needs too.
@1214mom What strength Retin-A are you using? Are you using the cream or the gel. I found the gel to be more drying. Also, I’ve cut down on the number of days per week I use Retin-A and if I find that if it’s causing too much flaking and drying I mix 1/3 Retin-A with 2/3 CeraVe lotion. I’m currently on the .01% strength.
I wash with Cetaphil because I’ve never come across any soap which doesn’t irritate or dry my face.
I find that waterproof mascara also comes off on my face and gives me the dark circles. Maybe I need to try a clear topcoat.
Does curling one’s lashes make a difference? Never done it.
I thought the Retin-A strengths were .1 (stronger) and .05 percent. I use the .1 every other night and put moisturizer on top of it. I think Retin-A is the single best thing you can do for your skin.
@saintfan - this is what I use and it’s scent free…http://tartecosmetics.com/tarte-item-timeless-smoothing-primer
At my age, it’s about the skin. I use Cellbone products: Hyper Peptide Advanced Line Defense Serum, Solidfirm Firming Cream, Eye Complex Eye Firm, Argireline Antiwrinkle Capsules, in that order.
I use a mask once a week to renew my skin cells.
I use mineral makeup (Youngblood), and would never go back to foundation if you paid me.
My products do not prevent aging (at least I don’t think so), but help me look as young and bright as possible with what I’ve got.
Agree about Retin A. I use it 5 out of 7 nights, I used the stronger strength, also. It really shrinks the pores and makes your skin look so much younger in general. I’m now using it on my chest about 3 days a week. That one took longer to get used to than my face, i didn’t know if it would ever stop itching but it did.
@Consolation – regarding curling eyelashes, it may depend on your eyes/eyelashes. My eyelashes are fairly light in color and not that thick. They really don’t show up unless I use an eyelash curler/mascara. I have a Shiseido eyelash curler - some of the cheaper ones I’ve tried didn’t really work for me. This is the one I have:
Any tips for dark circles under eyes??? I mean under the eyes as in just above the top cheek bone. I get plenty of sleep but I think as my face has thinned out, I seem to be left with darkness in this area.
abasket- I like the illuminators better than concealer unless you can find a concealer that really matches perfectly and sinks into your skin. Concealers can be tough on older skin and tend to show.

Oh, those nasty dark circles. Mine are more the tear trough…starts from inner corner of eye and round in a slight curve away from nose. Nothing will get rid of them. Thinner skin and the shadows from where I could use a lower blepharoplasty. For now, I use Laura Merciers 3 in 1 concealer. It’s the best I have found. You use just a tiny tiny bit and it really covers without looking as dried out as others. I then use their powder to keep it staying. I’ve wanted to try the Yves St. laurent Touche Eclat, but haven’t been able to cough up $70. I tried a Bobby Brown one and the makeup artist there said she thought my Laura Mercier looked just as good.
I also have an under 5 minute make up routine each morning. Mine is:
Skinceuticals serum
Skinceuticals sunscreen
BB cream/foundation
undereye cream (terrible dark circles, often trying new products as nothing’s great. I do like the 3 step Bobbi Brown but find I’m a little lazy most days and seem to save it for special occasions–have several others that are one step that I gravitate towards.)
Powder eyeliner applied with a brush to upper and lower lids
Mascara (the only one that flaked on me was an Estee Lauder one so I just use drugstore brands)
Swab of long lasting lip color
My dermatologist just prescribed retin A and it’s waiting at the pharmacy for me. I’m excited to see how it works for me.
My challenge (or, one of them) is that my facial cleanser doesn’t seem to get off all of my make up…and the amount of the BB cream I use is small. Does anyone have a cleanser to recommend that really removes make up?
I really like Origins Plantscription anti-aging cleanser. It’s foamy, smells good, and gets all the makeup off. I follow up with a non-alcohol toner just in case, though.
