My sister got in! Really good choices she has. Will be excited to see where she commits to!
accepted as a fritch scholar!!! after getting wl by w&m and cmu today i wasnāt expecting this at all, im so happy
My S24 was also admitted! Had a great visit so he is very excited.
Congrats to all the accepted students! Carleton is an incredible school with a truly collaborative atmosphere and great traditions!
Son was accepted. Decision time! Carleton, Oxy or Wesleyan are the finalists. Heās eliminated Bates and Grinnell. Honestly, it feels random. How to decide?
Congrats!! Your son has wonderful choices! Can I ask why Grinnell was eliminated from consideration?
My daughter was accepted! We will be doing our first visit in April and canāt wait. For those of you who have visited, any tips on transportation from airport, hotels, etc? Thank you!
Based on your having indicated in another topic that your son has an interest in practical applications of political science and economics, Carletonās inclusion in this site, as one of only three liberal arts colleges, may be worth noting:
More broadly, for an East Coast family, Carleton represents a geographical outlier. If your son seeks to extend his experience, Carleton merits especially strong consideration.
DS admitted! Also to Macalester. Only MN colleges have admitted him, as well as Tulane. Wait listed to Swarthmore and Denison.
Thanks gif thst info/ and re: Carleton I totally agree! Weāll see how he picks.
If youāre going during admitted students days, last year, Carleton arranged a bus for all admitted students and families from a few hotels in Minneapolis (or St. Paul, I canāt remember). That way we could check out the cities as well, and meet a few people (hotel breakfast was 100% Carleton prospective students). Iām sure theyāll send out that info soon. It was well organized and did drops at both the hotels and airports on the way back.
However, if you want to stay in Northfield you really need to rent a car. Easy to get a cab or uber from the airport, but you canāt get one in Northfield (kids figure out the shuttle, but I am sure you donāt want to deal with that). Northfield is a really cute town, but lacking in plentiful hotel space. The Fairfield Inn is steps from campus and the nicest spot. Otherwise I recommend finding an Air BnB - the motels are not awesome.
I wouldnāt say Grinnel has been eliminated -but it feels overwhelming to visit all of these places- esp since Iām teaching myself!
I have visited Carleton, and I know three graduates -the three are among the smartest, most versatile and warm women I know. So I am biased for Carleton. My older son has considered Carleton for ED - we visited and loved it- but he opted for Colby ED due to his passion for the outdoors -and was accepted. Younger son visited Carleton with the husband and didnāt love but I think they had a bad tour and bad weather. They loved Macalester- opportunity to live off-campus, the cute areaā¦
We will visit Oxy, Wesleyan and maybe a Midwest tour of 1-3 - all in a month! Crazy. Grinnell is falling off the list gif no good reason except MAYBE that my son has a bias against Iowa (idea that itās all Evangelicals who hate Jewish ppl. -which of course we donāt believe but we all know that regional stereotypes have an impact.) ?
Itās a lot to process. With my older son, he landed on Colby EARLY and got in. This time around weāre really in the mix of it and this is a GRIND. Hugs to all the kids and parents- weāll be fine SOON!
We are going to the accepted students programming in April. We booked though one of the hotels Carleton has a discounted rate at. They also offer a shuttle to the school but we may rent a car to see the area. Not sure yet.
Any thoughts on Colby vs Carleton as those are two my son is considering.
Congratulations to your son! He has two very amazing colleges to choose from!
We visited both when my D was doing her college search a few years agoāshe is currently a second year. Both are very impressive and she seriously considered both, but ended up at neither. They have a lot in commonāsize, both great LACāsābut I would say the biggest difference is the setting/location. Colby is in rural Maine and Carleton is in a lovely suburb of Minneapolis. Is your son more interested in being close to a vibrant urban setting, or is he more interested in a rural setting and the beautiful outdoors in Maine? Also, how important is access from where you live? We live in Northern CA and it would have been much easier for my D to get to and from Carleton than Colby.
Lastly, what is your son hoping to study, and is one school a better choice for his academic interests?
Wishing your son the best of luck with his decision!
Terrific options! Oxy a lovely school but academically not on par with Carelton or Wes
Coincidentally, these are the same schools my sister is thinking about! Of course, if she hears good news about Barnard and has the funding, then the choice is moot. But as it stands itās also Colby vs. Carleton. I kinda want to see if sheād be interested in attending Carleton. They seem to have a stronger CS program and an awesome studio art program. I even saw on their instagram that they have combined CS/Art courses. Thatās right up my sisterās interests! Unsure though because the art museum at Colby is cool too! Such a hard decision.
Thank you for the info! We are excited about our visit!
Carleton, from what Iāve seen of its faculty and curriculum, offers a very strong CS program.
Thatās what I keep telling my husband. But I donāt have anything to back it up. What besides rankings would you point to?
