Carleton College/Amherst College/Williams College vs. St. Olaf (Pre-med) [CA resident, 4.0 GPA]

I think by definition a place that is largely devoid of a diversity of philosophical and religious viewpoints is not a place to test one’s own beliefs, so I do not think an athiest or anyone else should expect to receive that experience at BYU or Bob Jones [an even stronger example than Baylor]. If the point of a place is to entrench a particular religion it is not a place to test your own, whatever it may be.

My two cents is the first priority is to get a good education. If a particular individual feels like certain sorts of colleges would be an excessive distraction from that goal, such that they prefer other sorts of colleges instead, that is usually fine with me, even if I personally might feel quite differently. They are not me.

Of course some people would not find it distracting to be challenged in certain ways, indeed they might be looking forward to it. That is also fine. But I would usually be reluctant to suggest a given individual must seek out that particular sort of challenge. I really think it is up to each individual to decide.

I do agree with this, despite my personal thoughts on the subject and how I would want my kids to approach it. It should of course be up to each person.

For those to whom this may have been unclear, I didn’t say that not getting in would represent a determinative sign. I suggested that getting in would represent a favorable sign.

Other fly ins to investigate - remember you will not get admitted to all so don’t hesitate to apply to all that sound interesting and keep your fingers crossed you get into 1-3:

  • Access to Amherst
  • Prologue to Bates
  • Explore Bowdoin
  • Taste of Carleton
  • Diversity Overnight At Case Western Reserve
  • Explore Connecticut College
  • Dartmouth Bound
  • Access Davidson
  • Dialogue with Denison
  • Home at Hamilton
  • Pathways to Providence
  • Discover Scripps
  • Dive Washington&Lee
Check each college website since I didn’t have time to check each college for deadlines, eligibility, conditions, etc. I also didnt include colleges like Oberlin or Mount Holyoke which may be too liberal for you.
You may also want to ask if an Sat or SCT score will be necessary since it’s basically impossible to find a test center in California between cancelations and simply shortage of test centers.

Some of those event names are cute – it’s Saturday and time for a bit of fun:

Taste of Carleton: This must be held in the Twin Cities, where the good dining is.

Diversity Overnight at Case: While you sleep, at least one of your demographic traits changes: you become 15 years younger or older; your race changes; your sex changes; the rich become poor and vice-versa; etc.

Dartmouth Bound: You don’t really get to know a college just by walking around and listening to descriptions and answers to questions, do you? Well at Dartmouth, they want participants to really feel the school. To that end, people are tied to campus buildings, trees, benches/chairs (etc.) to really become one with the school. They are literally bound to Dartmouth. Those able to escape their ropes in under an hour are entered into a prize raffle.

Dive W&L: Visitors are led to the diving pool, to the highest dive platform, and asked take the plunge. Those whose dives score the highest are given nicer towels.
