@mtjade – Website states sophomores can apply to Scholars Program.
@RussianMom That must he so frustrating because he has been so close at all of this colleges. Nothing is “going on”; it’s just that he applied to very selective schools. Hopefully he has some other good choices. In the meantime he should pick the one he really wants to go to and write them a letter telling them he’ll attend if he gets admitted. Have his guidance counselor call on his behalf.
Accepted into college of engineering, but wait listed for my choice major of electrical engineering. Could anyone explain how this works? I find out if I got into ee on June 1st but I have to make my decision for every college by May 1st…
@cheses100
Could you please copy and paste the text? That might help out. It may mean that you’re undeclared engineering to start. Does it explicitly say waitlisted to electrical engineering?
How do you check for your decision? When I log into “Where am I in the process?” there’s nothing for me to click on to see my decision. There’s a button which says “Financial Aid Notification,” but that’s it.
Hey there @cheses100! Here’s how ECE restricted works - those who get accepted ECE get first choice come freshman CIT major declaration day (just happened last week!). If you are in CIT but weren’t accepted into ECE initially, you can still declare ECE. You just don’t get first preference, and your admission into ECE is based on the available spots after everyone accepted ECE declares. Everyone who wasn’t accepted ECE but chose it as their major then getw ranked according to GPA, and the remaining spots get filled.
If you still want to do ECE, take 18-100 come the fall, do well in it (B or above), and do pretty well in your other classes and you’re almost guaranteed to get in. Very rarely do they have to reject people from ECE, but it has happened before.
TL;DR you aren’t 100% guaranteed a spot in ECE, but you get almost definitely get in if you really want to

Thank you for the opportunity to review your application for admission to the Carnegie institution of engineering, department of electrical and computer engineering for fall 2015. Each year we receive an increasing number of students who are interested in electrical and computer engineering. Because of the large number of qualified students who are interested in electrical and computer engineering, we are currently unable to offer you admission to this department and have places your name on the waiting list. However, we are impressed by your qualifications and feel that you can be successful at Carnegie Mellon. As a result you have been admitted to the other departments in the Carnegie institute of technology for fall 2015. These include the departments of chemical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and materials science and engineering and our double major programs in engineering & public policy and biomedical engineering. We are committed to meeting your need for intellectual discovery and personal growth, and we hope that you will make Carnegie Mellon your university.
For planning purposes, you should not enroll in one department with the hope of transferring into the department of electrical and computer engineering. Because of space limitations, it may be unlikely that you will be able to transfer into electrical and computer engineering. If the enrollment for electrical and computer engineering is not complete on June 1, 2015, we may be able to offer you a place in the department. If you would like to keep your name on the waiting list, please submit the waiting list reply form to the office of admission found at www.cmu.edu/ntia by April 10, 2015
Also, everyone who was accepted should check out my post about the FB group - come join! We can help with any questions you may have!
And, congrats!
Accepted to MCS, Tepper, and DC! I’m so surprised because I know CMU weighs demonstrated interest heavily and I never visited, and I also had my interview after the application deadline so I never had a chance to write that optional “How did your interview impact your decision to apply” essay. But congrats to everyone who was also accepted!
@tigermom2015
I just posted them in the results thread
@Vulkan
Well the thing is I’ve been accepted into the schools I really like into the electrical engineering program, so I would only choose cmu if I can be in electrical engineering, so what I’m wondering is how it would work if say, I commit to another school may 1, but then find out I got into electrical engineering at cmu on june 1? Can I still say to the other school I now don’t want too there and just lose the deposit or does it not work this way?
You can accept admission at another school. Then if you are lucky enough to get off the waiting list, you can tell the other school you’ve gotten off a waiting list, and accept CMU. That’s how waiting lists work.
Yep! Although remember that even if you don’t get off the waitlist for ECE, there’s like a 90%+ chance that you’ll still be able to major in ECE. And CMU’s ECE program is awesome
Okay, I got my fat envelope in the mail today.
It was almost torn to pieces. I should boycott the USPS for envelope cruelty. If that’s how they treat it when transporting, how they treat their 2-day shipping estimate is no surprise.
Are there only fat envelopes? Is everyone getting the good news both online and with a fat envelope, and the bad news online only?
@"Cardinal Fang"
Both good and bad news was supposed to arrive in the mail before being posted online, but the USPS did its thing and didn’t get all the letters to people by Friday.
Post #510 says only waitlist and accept will get letters, though, so IDK.
@"Cardinal Fang"
Denied students were also mailed letters, though they may have been first class rather than priority.
I think most people know this, but I just learned that priority waiting list is like “early decision” because it is binding and you must choose CMU and give up your previous SIR’ed university. The regular waiting list is the usual waiting list so I should probably choose the regular one…
any idea when int’l students will be getting FAT mails?
