*** Carnegie Mellon Class of 2019 RD Discussion and Results Thread***

@hungryteenager:

SAME! It actually had like black scratches on it and all the corners had imploded… Not a pretty sight.

Also, is there some type of inside joke as to why it’s significant that it’s a “FAT” letter? I can’t think of anything other than that it’s literally a fat letter. Does FAT stand for something? Maybe I’m just reading into it too much.

Has anyone on this thread received a thin letter?

@Questsnow‌ Accepted letters come in fat envelopes and rejections come in thin envelopes (probably more like there are more things in the envelope for admitted students, hence making the envelope fat…) I’m not sure though, b/c I have not gotten my letter yet.

The Fat envelope also says FAT envelope on it. It’s pretty hard to miss.

Nephew applied, but is away for the weekend. If he were rejected, I’m wondering whether his parents would see a thin, bad-news envelope or nothing.

@HopeIReallyGetIn‌

and anyone else who might know…

What is the point of a binding priority wait list if notification comes after May 1st?

It has no impact on admissions stats like a typical binding ED program.

They might save a trivial amount of time and clerical work, but I don’t see what else the school has to gain.

Does anybody know how to tell if I got into my ECE or just CIT in general, my letter read:

Congratulations! It is an honor to invite you to join Carnegie Mellon University’s Carnegie Institute of
Technology for Fall 2015. If you enroll in the Carnegie Institute of Technology, you will have the
opportunity to select a major from the departments of Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical &
Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science & Engineering, as well as our double
major programs in Engineering & Public Policy and Biomedical Engineering.

Each year, Carnegie Mellon receives an increasing number of applications from very talented students.
After reviewing the academic and supporting credentials of all of our applicants, we believe that you can
be very successful at Carnegie Mellon.

On behalf of the university, I want to express our confidence in you. We know that you will greatly
contribute to our campus community, both in academics and extracurricular activities. As a university, we
are committed to meeting your need for intellectual and personal growth, and we hope you will make
Carnegie Mellon your university.

@College90‌ you don’t declare a major until the end of freshman year so as long as you get into the right college you’re able to pursue your major later

@YZamyatin‌ To be honest, I’m not sure either, but a possible theory is that CMU wants to give applicants (whose top choice is CMU) a chance first… It could also possibly have to do with their yield rate (how many admitted people actually enroll at CMU)… since you have to give up your previous SIR’ed university due to the binding factor… Again, I’m just guessing… :slight_smile:

i live in socal will the letter come by today :frowning:

@heelloothere I live in NorCal and I got the fat envelope this morning! Accepted to CIT, MCS, and Information Systems.

Yeah, I’m wondering the same thing as @College90‌

I mean, it would probably say if we were not admitted for ECE (since that’s what we both applied to), but it would be nice to get confirmation.

@brooklynilene I absolutely agree with you! My son was waitlisted into CIT, his first choice, but accepted into MCS, his second choice. We can’t be sure he’ll get into CIT at any point nor do we expect any decent FA, so he’ll most likely end up at our State school because they have demonstrated they really want him. He’s sad. He has worked very hard and has great stats, but he’s not getting much in terms of merit money and his father refuses to spend an exorbitant amount on tuition. I get that! The process has been painful. So many qualified students not getting into the schools of their choice and not due to ability. Mostly it’s due to not having that “hook”. Many tears have been shed. I know my son will do well regardless of where he is, but he really wanted certain things. Best of luck to your son.

FAT letter just arrived today right next to a rejection letter from Georgetown lol

@graceunderfire‌ thanks :slight_smile: did you get the FA too im scared i will not be able to afford it as i am oos im looking towards cal berkeley

ahh nevermind just got it, no fa info

ME TOO!!! LOL

That was in response to khaleesi79

My Tepper acceptance and FAT letter came in the mail today :slight_smile: So excited, I think I’ll attend!

I was accepted to DC (!!) and waitlisted for MCS, and the plan was always to double major across these schools. If I attend, and accept my DC spot, is it possible for me to later major in MCS? And can I take classes in MCS when I enter as a DC student, so that I will not be behind if I move to a MCS major?
