How is priority wait list binding? I’m looking at my son’s letter. It doesn’t contain any ominous statements about how one is bound to accept a spot if it is offered. It does say that priority wait list if for those students who know that Carnegie Mellon is their first choice. I take this to mean “good luck getting in off the regular wait list suckers!”

The piece of paper enclosed with the snail mail letter says that priority wait list is for students who “will enroll if admitted.” To me, “will” is not the same as “must” or “commit to” enroll if admitted.

Also states “any admitted students will be required to post a non-refundable $800 enrollment deposit within 72 hours.” I read that to mean that if he is admitted, we have to post a deposit quickly.

Since he will certainly have accepted a place at another University by May 1, how can he be required to commit to give it up, just based a possible spot that may or may not open up at CIT? Granted, I haven’t seen the wait list form, because, even though the letter says the form is enclosed, it is not. Maybe that contains a blood oath.

One more thing: the snail mail letter, which arrived today (thank USPS), is different from the letter posted on the portal. The portal letter contains an extra paragraph inviting him to express interest in colleges other than CIT. But since that is not in the snail mail letter, it may be they changed their minds about that? Or did they add that to the portal letter, after they sent out the paper letter?

I applied to chemical engineering and was accepted to everything in CIT except EECS. Does CMU give a EECS spot priority to those who initially indicated EECS on their application because so many people applied?

@nycparent12 I know it is kind of hard to accept, but unfortunately it is the truth that the priority waiting list is binding. CMU accepts those on priority waiting list on the basis that those on the priority waiting list WILL enroll. If your son is unsure about enrolling at CMU off the waitlist, then the regular waiting list is for him. On the other hand, if he is sure that he will give up his acceptance to his initial SIR’ed university, then the priority waiting list is the choice for him. If your son thinks that CMU is clearly a better choice than his other choices, then priority waiting list is the way to go. Also, just a thought, but if you’re reluctant or hesitant to give up your original choice university, then there really is no reason to be on the priority waitlist. That’s why I, myself, am going for the regular waitlist (since I’m reluctant/hesitant).
Good luck!

I found a facebook post from previous years, posted by CMU admissions.

CMU admissions says that, “you should only select the Priority Waiting List option if you intend to enroll at Carnegie Mellon if admitted.”

@HopeIReallyGetin. I still maintain that CMU can’t bind us, but on the other hand, if my son really wanted to go so badly, I wouldn’t even bring this up. Since his desired department is not an option, I don’t think my son is interested at this point. However, given your hesitation, why even bother with the regular wait list? Just for the heck of it? I imagine there is basically no real chance of getting in off the regular list.

@nycparent12 That is true… I see your point. The thing is that CMU is too expensive for me and I didn’t get into my major (ECE)… That is why I’m probably hesitant to just commit to CMU after getting off the waitlist. I guess I really do hope that regular waitlist people have at least a slight chance, although I think you’re probably right.

@HopeIReallyGetin. Yup, I forgot to mention the money. And you put your finger on it (ECE not an option).

CWRU here we come.

admitted.

Hey stupid question but I never got an application ID and therefore never made an online account. I also did not get a letter in the mail today from CMU and live in south eastern PA. Is there any way to make an account now or am I screwed? And does not receiving a letter today mean I didn’t get in?

@albinofish20 The application ID is your commonapp ID.

@albinofish20‌ application ID is on the commonapp

@HopeIReallyGetIn‌ @nightowl19‌ You guys are my heroes!! I got in to Mellon College of Science!!

Reposting for those with ECE questions:

Here’s how ECE restricted works - those who get accepted ECE get first choice come freshman CIT major declaration day (just happened last week!). If you are in CIT but weren’t accepted into ECE initially, you can still declare ECE. You just don’t get first preference, and your admission into ECE is based on the available spots after everyone accepted ECE declares. Everyone who wasn’t accepted ECE but chose it as their major then getw ranked according to GPA, and the remaining spots get filled.

If you still want to do ECE, take 18-100 come the fall, do well in it (B or above), and do pretty well in your other classes and you’re almost guaranteed to get in. Very rarely do they have to reject people from ECE, but it has happened before.

TL;DR you aren’t 100% guaranteed a spot in ECE, but you get almost definitely get in if you really want to

I was waitlisted by SCS. When I go to the wait list reply form, I don’t see the priority list option. I can only choose between remain on the Regular Waiting List or remove from the waitlist. Does that mean I did not qualify for the priority list?

@col478 You can only be on the priority waitlist if your decision letter says CMU offers you a priority waitlist spot.

@tigermom2015 I’ll post them in the decisions thread here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/carnegie-mellon-university/1756750-carnegie-mellon-university-class-of-2019-rd-decision-only-p1.html

 STILL SO SHOCKED AND HAPPY!

accepted! and invited to the science and humanities scholars program!

@Vulkan‌
So for switching into ece would I just be to take the first year at cmu which in cit is Basically the same for any major and just try to get good grades to get into ece? Are there any major specific courses the first year that I would miss out on
