Perhaps, but for the Reddit analysis to be accurate, the waves would have to be pretty far spread apart. Hopefully that’s not the case.

S24 accepted into Chem Engineering. I didn’t see acceptance letter yet as he’s not home. We never got an email notifying us results were in.

They will most likely be far apart… CMU competes with MIT/Caltech and other top engineering schools for yield.
If it is not for yield, then don’t see why not release all admits at same time.
Other theory that I am hearing is for lower portal traffic. This as well does not make sense… the number of refreshes that happen when you don’t have your results are more than when you see your result and move away from site.
They said the results were going to be rolling out throughout the rest of March, so they can’t space it out too much. Most people applying to CMU aren’t going to be committing until after Ivy Day results are out. The logic behind this slow roll really escapes me because I don’t think it’s really tied to yield with this timeframe.

Doesn’t really make sense. There’s still quite a lot of guesstimating when not all admitted students have enrolled by the SIR date. A waitlist makes a lot more sense for this purpose - you admit the students you definitely want and make conservative measurements about yield, and as the SIR date passes and you have accurate data on whether you overenrolled or not, you start pulling people from the waitlist.
They did say they were using a new system for the admission portal this year. I suspect they didn’t want to risk a crash, so they are releasing them across multiple dates, seeing how the system behaves under load, and then making adjustments to their system.

I know this sounds silly- but could it be alphabetical!?
I think this is more likely a soft wait list. Most of us not having updates will be wait listed at the end of March but some might be admitted before that, should any place opens.
