But if you are not receiving any need based aid, then it would change it. I believe it’s an art scholarship- I’ll try to get more details but didn’t want to get too nosy just yet
yes! think they are waiting for fafsa to process, unfortunately.
I don’t believe they can do much until they receive the FAFSA information. God know how long that will take with the mess it has been this year.
I haven’t seen anything that says merit or artistic aid is a thing at CMU. They are highly focused on need based aid.
And yet we have received estimated awards from all other CSS Profile schools my son was accepted to. CMU could do this if they wanted to.
Merit scholarships should not depend on CSS of FAFSA. The loan is a different story.
CMU says right on the FAQ page. They do not offer merit aid. There are certainly some scholarships people alcan try for but in general people should rely on what the NPC, Fafsa, and CSS profiles to assist them in determining the reality of going.
I can confirm that CMU only focuses on need-based aid. If you are full-pay you will receive a poorly worded letter saying that you can more than afford the $82,000 a year ticket price at CMU. It also comes along with a brochure explaining where you can get those funds from. A brochure which suggests you take out a second mortgage on your house will accompany this letter! We got this in 2019. I wish I would have kept it. It was terrible, terrible advice.
fwiw my cousin has been employed at CMU for 30+ years. She says there are more than enough students lined up willing to pay the $82K a year, mostly int’l students. So they don’t need to offer many incentives I suppose.
My son was an applicant 5 years ago and one of the violin professors emailed me that they didn’t have merit scholarships like most of the music schools. We didn’t qualify for any financial aid but to my surprise, they gave my son more than half of the tuition assistance. I didn’t know what the fund was.
Wow that is crazy! Must be a secret fund they don’t talk about. They do have to fill seats in programs or jobs go away!!
We are full pay too and low and behold we passed on the CMU full price ticket. S19 was BXA Piano/Mellon Science.
He ended up down the road at Pitt with a generous merit scholarship (he was valedictorian) graduated with 2 degrees in 4 years with a 4.0 and is now headed to medical school. He will have no debt from either.
Did your son end up at CMU?
No, he ended up at University of Washington and he was a Direct Admit to CS. He got a CS degree and music minor. He now at CMU CS for graduate studies.
If you ask their admissions office, they are doing that. They’re supposed to come this week or next. And no they don’t offer scholarships or merit aid, I asked
Anyone received confirmation email after they submitted the waitlist form ?
Thanks for letting me know. I was waiting for the air to clear a little before contacting them. Still, imo, it’s surprising that they aren’t emailing this intention or, at least, stating it in the “stay tuned” box on the portal.
Was on the Alumni webinar last night and lots of questions about financial aid in the chat – they said waiting for FAFSA then will send out packages.
Did they say what FAFSA provides that CSS cannot?
Nope - all my son’s other CSS schools have sent out packages without waiting for FAFSA.
FAFSA is based on verified tax Information. CSS is not. So maybe with SAI and ISIR in hand, they don’t have to ask us to submit our tax documents as they don’t need to process these documents?
Congrats on the medical school. Pitt medical school ranks high!
We were at the Turn Tartan Days and they said hopefully by the end of this week, an estimate of the financial package will be up.
