We are in the same boat: Son was deferred from ED to RD, and now we are still waiting to hear the decision. Three of my son’s friends (we’re all OOS) got their results yesterday – 2 accepted, 1 wait-listed.
Doubtful. Regardless of your 1st choice school, the only option for a 2nd choice was the school of fine arts.
Love the schools who love you back. My DD was WL for CS. She’s turned it down.
Same here. Deferred from ED to RD and the letter from December is still in his portal with no new decision. It’s almost as if they forgot about their ED folks!
I’m leaning more towards the Ivies, I’m hoping to get into one of those. But comparing CMU and Berkeley, CMU CS is better since people who graduate from there have very high salaries after graduation and it’s much easier to get a job compared to Berkeley
Please hold your head high and keep going. Your DS is very accomplished, esp considering how hard pure math is. No this is not a trend. You should stay on WL, irrespective of last few years trends. We are in the same boat. Our DS got into CMU after a few rejections. You never know what good things lie ahead. Wishing your family best of luck!
Same here, daughter deferred ED, hasn’t heard, all her friends have heard.
Any deffered ED applicants - got back result’s?
No. How ridiculous that they did not release decisions for the ED deferred kids! These students have been waiting the longest and were ready to commit. It’s pretty infuriating.
Thank you so much! My son really appreciates all the positive energy. More waitlists today…but these were from schools that took common app essay only. However, we did interact with a pure math prof at one of these institutions and my son even shared his research papers, attended virtual events etc. Math prof was impressed that the papers were written by someone in high school, that they were not just a summary of the work by grad-school mentors (!). This is a school that is not as selective as CMU. But I am not sure if the professor could or would have any say in Admissions. At another institution, when my son tried to send an abstract and paper to the AO, they flat-out refused saying the teachers didn’t have time to read and give feedback. (he meant it for the Admissions Team to glance at and consider as part of his profile, LOL.
He has been admitted to his safety in-state school and two UCs (!–but being oos, the UCs are not affordable. we thought they were just ‘double the price of in-state’ but it’s 84k! His in-state school will not allow any enrollment deferrals, and he was hoping for a gap year. The IB program is great but dreadful.) Who knows, maybe these WL will turn out to be a fine thing. He is the sort of person who got more done during the pandemic than most of his peers. I know these WL and rejections hurt, but his passion for math seems to keep him focused. Extended family support helps. There has been no judgement regarding the outcome of any of these applications and for this we are enormously grateful. Only genuine good wishes. Thank you for being a safe space and congratulations to all who were accepted to CMU and schools of their choice. Enjoy the moment!
To all who are still waiting or who have been rejected, I hear you! Please let me know if you have a strategy with waitlists.
I think we will be discussing our WL strategy more seriously this evening.
Thank you so much! I had tears in my eyes reading your post and the other responses as well, but when I read ‘hold your head high’ I just about lose it! My son is the kindest person. Congratulations on DS being accepted to CMU! So very happy for you. I hope you are celebrating today!
Thank you so much. This is our sentiment about a couple of schools right now. Or maybe mine? Best wishes to your DD!
Hi, did the acceptance letter says that you are admitted to the chemical engineering department? My son applied to ECE. The acceptance letter says “The Carnegie Mellon University Admission Committee is pleased to offer you admission to the College of Engineering.” The letter does not specify a department. Wonder what that means. Thank you.
I am sure your DC will get in past WL!
That’s what his said but he got an email
Today from chem e directly
We did not hear anything from ECE. So not sure what that means. We sent an email to school to clarify. Thank you.
Here is one link I came across, you may want to google more.
What to Do If You’ve Been Waitlisted by Carnegie Mellon 2024 — TKG.
If no luck from CMU in the end, just go to one of his best choice and continue his journey, he could try UCB, MIT type of schools for a math PHD later.
Thank you very much for your kind thoughts and encouragement. CMU’s WL process is particularly stressful, and there are no guarantees. I wish @pancakess all the best and anyone else on the WL lots of good energy. We’ll see how the rest of the month plays out.
A little late, but I got accepted for chem on Friday. 4.51 gpa, 15 APs, solid (but not exceptional) ECs. Was very shocked when I got in.
How does CMU CSC (school of computer science) compare to Caltech CMS (Computing & mathematical science?
