Carnegie Mellon Class of 2029 Official Thread

My kid was just waitlisted, but when they click on the link to reply to the waitlist they get an error. Is anyone else experiencing that? They did not get an email either. They just checked the portal and the status was updated.

same with no form

Is everyone who was waitlisted part of the “priority waitlist”. In the waitlist reply form it says “yes, add me to the priority waitlist”?

Thankyou

Did not adding a secondary choice of major/school lower my acceptance chances overall?

Great job. More like Patrick loves coding, amirite?

One of my top choices but UCSD ICAM acceptance is easing the pain a lot. Congrats to those in, and best of luck to those on the wait-list. Good things happen y’all!!!

are you leaning towards CMU or Berkeley?

Last year we had acceptance on the first day. People we knew that heard after that were WL and rejected. Calls for Actors and MTs went out almost two weeks ago.

Decisions I have heard of today are acceptances and WL.

waitlisted, im sad

If I get the regents scholarship (I am in state) then Cal will be my choice. CMU is 3.5x more expensive, but I have quite a few scholarships I am waiting on. Really comes down to if I want Mathematics at Berkeley or Linguistics at CMU. Happy with either tho, tbh

Congratulations to you and to all who have been accepted by CMU! What an achievement! And for linguistics!

My son was waitlisted today for pure math. This is my first time posting anything on the internet in 12 years–but I felt compelled–especially after seeing so much activity around CMU here and on Reddit. I have never before seen such emotional investment online especially for one school from so many hopeful young people (and parents). After a grueling application process, CMU quickly moved into our top 5 and, after taking a peek at my son’s essays this last week, I thought he had a competitive application: even stronger than his MIT application (although he had done research there–he was rejected by MIT). For CMU, he demonstrated a love of pure math with a solid background in CS as well as philosophy and logic. I know that at least two of his 3 LORs were exceptional [IB full diploma, 1530 SAT; 4.0 unweighted; 2 summer math research papers; a CS textbook/handbook he wrote himself among other ECs] Do we bother with WL form (if there is no movement, why? or see how the rest of the applications play out? He’s been WL at other ‘target’ schools, and we are wondering if this is a trend

He is a quiet listener type who perseveres and works extremely hard, not a show-off. We thought Haverford would be a good fit, if not CMU, but he was WL there too. (there was less room to make his case with Haverford than with CMU) So the mixed signal is discouraging. We had spent time discussing his potential ‘fit’ at each school (did not apply willy-nilly) and there seemed to be a possible community for him at each place. While I am heartbroken that my son did not get admitted to his dream school (MIT), for some reason, I am even more heartbroken about the double CMU and Haverford WLs than I am at the the MIT rejection.

Back to my question: from prior history or knowledge: when WL at CMU or schools of similar tier, could this be a trend as we look forward to decisions from Swarthmore, Williams and other schools with excellent pure math programs? My son was deliberate regarding applying to schools. I guess in terms of investing time and psychological energy into a LOCI, is it now time to really ask ourselves 1) where is he most likely to fit/thrive and where is there likely to be movement in the WL? or do we encourage him to write to both places? (he can name professors and prospective projects at both schools!)

Thank you and congratulations again to those who were accepted. For those on the waitlist or who were rejected by CMU or another college today, I hear/read you!

There is no update for my son. Are results out for everyone? He applied for ED and was deffered to RD. His portal shows last updated Dec 13

I am hearing you. What a compelling profile, yet some discouraging results. But don’t lose heart. I don’t know much about CMU. My D25 applied elsewhere. I just want to say your son is not alone. I heard so many cases where the applicant is so competitive, yet faces rejections this year. Is there a deadline for the LOCI? Does he already have some acceptances? I wonder how much weight an LOCI will bear at this point. My daughters have both written LOCI for deferred schools but not for WL schools. But then again, if your son is keen to write it, by all means, please do it.
Good luck. I hope he has some safeties that he is happy with. Keep believing. He will land at a school that fits him well.
