Carnegie Mellon Summer Academy for Math and Science (SAMS) and AP/EA 2018

@ak2018 Do you know the reason for the mixup with AI? Normally for other summer programs I’ve never seen such disconnect between the admissions and the students, with the confusing decisions and the delay with their release

@MyGPAIsAnL It’s likely because the guy who does AI admissions is also a CMU professor. The disconnect is merely due to the fact that the people who are making these admissions decisions have other jobs to do, such as reviewing actual college applications and teaching, in addition to the pre-college programs. Because they’re so wrapped up in their other jobs and getting decisions out to their senior applicants is their first priority, their process is pretty lengthy. I believe they review decisions whenever they all have time away from their work of higher priority. MIT has an entire department dedicated to their outreach programs, so they aren’t that bad with it.

No email as of yet. Don’t they normally send emails in the morning, like 9am?

I haven’t received anything either…maybe I should call?

Don’t call lets just wait it out

@ak2018 Do you happen to know if waitlist status will be cleared all at once in may or will they send it out whenever there’s a spot open?

@hmas671 They will send it out individually as they will not have time to do otherwise. As people start to decline their offers, people will come off the waitlist one-by-one. They want to fill all of their spots ASAP.

I see, thanks!

If they do not send out emails about AI today, then we have to wait until next week and worry about this all weekend. Has anyone called the office today to check on the status of AI and whether all the SAMS acceptances have all been sent out? I guess the office closed today at 5 pm EST?

@silvercloud I called just before they closed. Looks like you guys might have to wait another week. I’m with you guys on this, it’s getting kind of ridiculous at this point. But we have to understand that the professor at CMU who leads this program is quite busy teaching and may not have an entire team like SAMS does. It might not even be CMU’s fault, but rather the fault of AI4ALL, the organization that funds the AI program. It could be that CMU is waiting to hear from them as they might have their own admissions decision process. I wouldn’t be surprised if they, not CMU, are actually in control of admissions. I don’t know exactly, but I am about to email the AI4ALL company to get to the bottom of this for you guys. Again, I wouldn’t get mad at CMU since this is their first year working with this company.

Thank you @ak2018!

I really do think AI4ALL is actively involved with the admissions decisions, therefore taking longer. We send our applications, CMU shares with AI4ALL, AI4ALL and CMU talk about their unified standard of admission, CMU contacts the students. But how did the guy last week who called get told he was already rejected to AI is what I’m wondering

Also AI4ALL’s website was down last week for some reason. Could indicate they might also be solving some internal issues or something

Do they release decisions over the weekend or only during the weekday

Rejected for SAMS
SAT 1530, GPA 3.93 UW, 5.66 W. HIgh Income Asian Male. Very disappointed.

@sams2018 when did you get your rejection?

I got my decision for AP/EA 4 days ago. I’m still confused whether I got rejected or waitlisted.
It says "At this time, we’re unable to offer you admission due to space constraints and have placed your name on our Waiting List. "
What does this mean?

@Alevander. Tuesday

@whatiskkaebsong if it says you were waitlisted then you were waitlisted. There should have been a part of the email for you to confirm your spot and if you’d like to wait and see if a spot opens up for the program. You weren’t rejected

@ferncuad It looks like it means I could have been accepted if I had submitted the application earlier. Is that correct?
