@cmuapea I unfortunately do not know the stats, but I’ll go ahead and add you.
if you’re into STEM, DO NOT DO diversity pre-college. SAMS is better, I got into both and made the wrong pick
*dont do diversity pre-college APEA
Why
I think it’s because the AP/EA diversity program isn’t very diverse (most of the people who got were those who could pay to get in, which was in addition to the students who got in with a full scholarship) and has less of an admissions connection to CMU, apparently. SAMS has less freedom than AP/EA, but I guess with AP/EA, because of the wealthier kids, it is seen as less prestigious than SAMS. You still have the ability to get into CMU through AP/EA with the scholarship as well as by paying for the program, you’ll just have a harder time doing so as admissions tends to focus more on the SAMS kids by getting them interviews and more time with the admissions officers. It’s really the sad truth about AP/EA. In my opinion, they should just separate the AP/EA into paid and full-tuition scholarship sections and put the full-tuition scholarship section with the SAMS kids, since most of those students combined are in similar situations. If you got into AP/EA with a scholarship, you’re likely still a competitive applicant, you just might not get into CMU. @jeffrandell got into a few top schools and did AP/EA, so it’s definitely possible. But yeah, in my opinion, if you want a more diverse experience at CMU and want to attend there someday, SAMS and AI are better. @MyGPAIsAnL
If you were waitlisted, has anyone heard back yet?
@ak2018 since I got rejected for SAMS, does this mean I have less chances to be selected at CMU? My specs are
SAT 1530 one sitting. GPA 3.90 UW, 5.66 W. Planning to take SAT Subject test for Math level 2 and Physics in June.
My plan is to apply for ECE in RD. Can’t apply in early decision because of financial aid uncertainty.
Thanks.
@sams2018 Your chances are not lowered and you are still able to apply to CMU to see if you get in.
Also curious to know if anyone has gotten off the waitlist for SAMS
Can anyone weigh on this? I took an internship opportunity with an Electrical Engineer at a University, planning on working under him this entire summer. Also optimistic that I could still have a chance getting in AI. Do you think if I did get in AI I could work on both this summer and still establish a good relationship with the professor to ask for a recommendation? Or do you think I’m taking too much and that top colleges (i.e. Ivies) will see a conflict in my summer schedule as a detriment
@Tennismomto5 @ferncuad I don’t know. But I will call today.
@MyGPAIsAnL Unless you would be allowed to intern before and after AI for a good amount of time, I would not even bother going for AI. Especially if it’s a paid internship. Also, some advice from a senior, you should make sure you are not overdoing it with events this summer. Colleges definitely like seeing that you are active over the summer, but not if it causes you to burn out senior year.
Did anyone hear back if they got waitlisted for either AI or SAMS?
@tennismomto5 @ferncuad @astrasammy I called yesterday and they had confirmed that people are being taken off the waitlist as people notify SAMS and AI that they cannot attend, so you would be notified as people decline their acceptances. This year, likely due to increased popularity of the SAMS program, there are likely going to be less people pulled off the waitlist this year. I am only speculating at this point, but the waitlist might be ranked instead of by the day they were waitlisted. A little unfair, but reasonable. Last year, 30 of 50 people were waitlisted, so it’s likely going to a lower number this year.
Aw alright. I really hope I make it :^)
thank you for calling!
My son just got off the waitlist for SAMS! So excited for him!
@Tennismomto5 Congrats to your son! I know you guys have been waiting so long for this! You previously mentioned his prior situation with foster care in the past and I would just like to say that I admire you and your son’s triumph. He’ll have a wonderful time at SAMS. Hope he uses those connections to full the fullest!
i was admitted to APEA with the scholarship too! What classes are you taking? i cant pm bc im a new member but do you have a reddit or something?
So I have been taken off the waitlist for SAMS too! According to the Enrollment Checklist, I’m supposed to fill out required forms by Tuesday, May 15. I just got my acceptance email on Friday and haven’t received the FastPass email yet. Should I be worried? What should I do?
@magandren They will probably give you more time since you just got the email. You should be fine. Congrats!
Is it due at the end of the day on Tuesday May 15th or before Tuesday May 15th which is basically today
