I wish they tell us if they dont have spot left. Also international prob shouldn’t accept and take a gap year. For their sake, the chances of them getting a visa is very low, with trump banning even immigration. Might as well leave some spot for people who might get in. Holding on to a spot that you can’t go to is like getting food stamp when you have enough food. This is just my opinion, u can agree or not. If you have enough money to attend cmu full cost, then im sure you would be fine with taking a gap year and attending next year. CMU freshmen usually consists of 20% international kids, maybe theres more hope for other applicant this year. Help the rest of us out.
Why wouldn’t international students accept and defer? Isn’t deferment a more or less a guaranteed admissions to next year? At a school with a low acceptance rate I’d expect not only international students will defer but domestic.
By the way fall and spring with a student visa you need the US government to approval online classes as there is a limit to how many credits can be taken online. They did an exception for the spring.
@Jubymon How bad is the immigration ban and how is it affecting international students from getting a visa and studying in the US? I hoped to get into CMU as a freshman next year but I’m hopeless after reading your comment. Isn’t the immigration ban only affecting people who want to get a green card (not an F-1 student visa)?
no international student is willing to waste a year in their life for some gap year cuz its not really a thing here. Everyone will accept and try their best to come to school.
No I applied for Dietrich. And I doubt they accepted anyone cuz no-one here got any news from Dietrich. And plus I’m international so you know how it goes.
The other option is to attend ur local school. You can accept and defer which still leaves room, but most people are gonna accept and not defer. Plus, the bill is going to come during August and are u going to waste 70k for online classes. The only argument u can make is that ur family isn’t doing that well financially and that they needed u to graduate as soon as possible. But that doesn’t even work bc they are paying full cost anyways +living expenses. Highly doubt international kids are struggling finically and the one that are struggling and are smart enough would have gotten in through normal admission if not early decision. Even if school remains open and that you can get a visa to get in, given the model of the 2nd wave of the virus, schools are most likely gonna close. What are you going to do then. Your most likely gonna spread covid to ur family when u return or you gonna be stuck in ur dorm like some international kids are doing now. If u look at all the recent cases in Asia and other countries, they are all from people coming back from other country. This post isn’t meant hate on international kids but there’s not enough resources for the domestic kids let alone international kids. The ones that are smart enough would have gotten in already. I’m sure they have their 2nd choice already.
do you think attending a local college in Asia is that simple you just walk in? There is test you take once a year and if you miss it u can’t get into any schools. So basically when students from Asia apply for US college they choose to give up their chances to go to local schools. And local schools does not care about any of the virus thing you have to have a grade in that exam. International kids usually got the bread so money its’s that big of a issue. I mean your saying ur not hating but basically you r. So in ur opinion local schools should just take local students. I think diversity is what makes CMU great but apparently u disagree. LOL. I’m just stating the fact that international kids most likely would not take a gap year they will try their best to go to schools. And this is the fact you have to accept that.
lol i would have to disagree. Having more international kids doesn’t make it more “diverse” So dont even try to pull the diversity card. It doesn’t really apply to Asians lol. These aren’t normal times. Literally the one that are qualified should have gotten in already. Like ofc he cant make international kids not come. It’s merely a suggestion lol. Other kids in Asian would have to retake the exam like everyone else lol. What makes u so special just bc ur rich enough to send ur kids abroad. lol and “local school don’t care” like Asia literally was the epicenter of the virus. It’s literally affects everyone of us. I think his simply giving advice for international kids lol. Like u said they got enough dough. Back to the fake liberal accusation that u just to put on him. Black people literally make up only 4% of the population at cmu so do some actually research before u open ur mouth.
Ofc international kids gonna do whatever they want, it’s merely a suggestion bc I’m sure not everyone likes u. Stop twisting the argument, never said no international kids. Actually pretty grateful to them, bc if they pay full that means that they help someone else in need to attend. If ur grades are high enough to be waitlisted cmu, u could attend a good school in ur local area. So don’t make it seem like this is their one and only chance. I personally took the Hong Kong college entrance exam twice and got offers to attend school in us. So stop making it a false dichotomy, it’s not either or. Also as current events, cal states recently canceled fall semesters and move to online classroom. So back up ur argument with some actual evidence, instead of some surface knowledge and emotional attacks.
Anyways hope y’all get off waitlist and see ya next year
Oh ya “I think diversity is what makes cmu great” don’t worry bro cmu isn’t gonna look at this. This isn’t a supplementary essay. Don’t need to kiss their butt that hard lol. 4% black and u think having more international kids gonna make it more “diverse “. I’m laughing lil bro. I’m all for diversity, but not at the expense of actually looking at each person qualifications. Mic drop I’m out bois.
Got a bit excited while writing this and mis wrote that it was my friend who took the Hong Kong exam. Did anyone hear from engineering or any other school today.
They got that class by looking at each person’s qualifications. It was all about scores, scores, and scores.
I think CMU CS is a fantastic school, but my concern is that it appears to have a very high workload requirement to the point of overload. I don’t want to send my son off to be another Lazlo Hollyfeld!
For those too young to have seen the movie Real Genius, here is a clip from it:
