I won a Ben Carson Scholarship for college in the fourth grade (year 2003-2004). I’ve told my mother that I’m not going to include this on the common app because it says, “Briefly list any academic distinctions or honors you have received since the ninth grade.” She says that since it is a scholarship that doesn’t apply until after high school, it doesn’t matter when I won it, and that it should it be included. Who’s right?

B…u…m…p…

Bump!!!

Can anyone answer this question for me, please, so I can get my mom off my back?

Bump…

I would definitely put it on the application because it is a scholarship for college; however, you may want to list it towards the bottom of the achievements section of the Common App, or include it on your resume if you are planning to send one in.

How would I include it on the application if I won it in elementary school? I don’t have the application in front of me, but I think I have to check what grade I won it in (9, 10, 11, 12, post-graduate).

I would not put down that scholarship. Middle school awards don’t count. Why should elementary school?

Your mom is just wrong. No one ever puts “Jack Kent Cooke Scholar” or “Duke Talent Search” on the Common App. Think of awards that you’ve won since freshman year to put down or just leave it blank.

Normally I would say leave out anything from before 9th (or sometimes 8th) grade, but if it is a significant scholarship, I think it could be helpful simply because that’s less need the college has to meet for you if you are accepted.

EDIT: I see that it’s not a HUGE amount, but that you can win it up to 11th grade, so I think you should put it down.

http://carsonscholars.org/content/programs/scholarship-faqs

It can be won up to eleventh grade, but the monetary prize can only be won once, so I only applied for it once-- in the fourth grade. How would I enter that on the common app if I were to enter it if it asks what high school year I won it?

I do have other awards (that I won in high school) to put down. My mom just thinks this award should be put down, too.

If your mom really wants you to put it down, you can just list in in “Additional Information.” There, you can just say “Carson Scholar” and you don’t technically have to put down a year or anything. Problem solved!

So this isn’t something I should list on the common app, but rather on my resume?

Depends on whether you have other honors that are better.

As ojodeltigre mentions, there is also an additional information section where you can add this honor. Considering national merit scholars get only 2500, $1000 scholarship won in 4th grade but could have been won in 11th also should nt be discounted.

Thanks everyone! I do have better honors from high school, so I’ll just put this on my resume.
