Case Western Reserve Early Action / Early Decision for Fall 2024 Admission

How do you weight between Case and UMich? Both are really good school. We also have some options that are closer to home. It’s really tough decision.

My son never really was interested in UofM because 1. he did not like the campus vibe, 2. half his classes would be at the main campus and half at an off-site engineering campus, and 3. his mom is a MSU Spartan. Living in Michigan, it is sacrilege to not apply to UofM, so he went through the motions, but his heart wasn’t in it. We also know mid-career engineers from UofM and they will not hire from UofM because the program is long on theory and short on practical application.

Case, while not as highly rated, was smaller, more student friendly, far less crunchy and made it easy to double major or minor.

Absolutely agree. I’m still absolutely gobsmacked that DD24 hasn’t been offered admission. Other than declaring ED, we’ve done everything suggested and her stats are far above average for their admissions. It all seems so chaotic at this admissions office compared to the 10 offers of admission she’s received at far bigger (and smaller) schools.

Case practices yield management and often defers very high stat students and invites them to apply ED II. They assume that these students are using them as a safety and would rather offer admissions to students who are likely to come. When my son applied a couple years ago CC forums were filled with parents howling in indignation that their high state student was accepted by much more prestigious schools, but deferred by Case.

Anyone knows if CWRU Grant is for need base only? We indicated that we will not apply FA when submitted application and my son did receive merits. However, I am seeing some others from reddit mentioned about CWRU grant and make their COA way down. Just wondering if it will worth a try or we should just be grateful that we got merits already?

If you did not apply for financial aid - i.e. did not submit a FAFSA and CSS, then you will not get a grant. Nor will you be eligible to apply for financial aid in future years.

Of course you will see kids with a low cost of attendance because Case Western meets 100% of demonstrated need.

So for those who qualify, they can have a cost - all the way down to zero.

One should always be grateful for two things (in my mind):

  1. Merit aid

  2. Choice - you have a price point now for CWRU and you can decide if that price point is worth paying or if you should have your student attend elsewhere at a price point more favorable for your needs

You didn’t apply for financial aid and even if you did, there’s no assurance you’d receive any - it depends entirely on your financial situation (and overall need level since they are need aware).

You did, however, receive merit it and that’s in recognition of your son’s accomplishments - and their hope that he’ll choose them over other competitive schools.

Good luck.

Thank you. We did submit FAFSA and it finally got process on Mar 16th. I just did not submit CSS to CWRU as I thought it’s for need base only and we won’t qualify.

It is for need based aid only.

But that’s why some got grants - which are need based - and yes, some may have got very large ones if their financial situation dictated this.

Best of luck in your student’s decision.

Our son - and many others on CC - was given a merit award not based on need. I think Case calls it a “President’s Award”, or something similar. There are other merit awards, including one that covers full tuition. That one requires an essay and I think there is only one given each year (not sure if that is for each college or the entire university).

https://case.edu/admission/tuition-aid/scholarships has the list. I guess the most common merit scholarship is called “University Scholarship”.

Maybe I was thinking of the “University Scholarship”. My mistake. Regardless of the name, Case was throwing these awards out like candy the year my son applied.

We absolutely indicated that she would attend if admitted and given need based financial aid. It was always in her top three choices.

Anyone going for admitted students’ days this week?

Hi - My son was accepted for Spring Start as well. Engineering major. We asked about him participating in the Madrid program and they said he was too young (must be 17 by May 19th) which is odd because other schools who offer similar programs for 1st Fall Semester do not have this rule. Case is one of his top choices so he may do a GAP semester and accumulate some credits and start Spring. We were told that between Fall Madrid participants, Spring Start 1st years (who are too young for Madrid), and Transfers there are about 150 students in total who do Spring Start. Not ideal for many students but it seems like more and more schools are offering this option.

My son as accepted for Spring Admit as well. They have a Madrid study abroad program they offer to some Spring Admits but apparently my son is too young (must be 18 by May 19th and his bday is in July…). If he decides to go Case he will take a Gap semester of his choosing, accumulate some credits and start in Spring with the other 150 or so students who do the same (Madrid, Transfers and those, like my son who are too young for Madrid). Not optimal since other 1st years will be settled in by January, especially for an engineering major, California kid (start in the DEAD of Winter - we were there for admit student day in January and it was FRIGID.) Luckily, my kid is super outgoing, loves a challenge and is mailable so he will be fine.

Is it “18 by May 19th” as in 18 in a month and a half? 3+ months BEFORE college starts? I’m really surprised by that.

I had thought the Madrid first semester sounded awesome for an engineer because it’s usually really hard to take a semester or a year for a study abroad program when you’re trying to complete engineering requirements. CWRU in Madrid sounded like a GREAT way to be able to get international exposure and still complete an engineering degree.

We were shocked that my son recieved a grant. It said household size-4, number in college-2, and my son was given a generous grant in addition to a very generous scholarship after being deferred. It is his first choice so far and by far the lowest cost of attendance (still waiting on 2 decisions).

Congrats. We only got $5500 federal unsubsidized loan in addition of university scholarship awarded early but still good option to us too.

My son was deferred in EA to RD. He was accepted in RD and he got a similar financial award (University Scholarship + same amount on federal unsubsidized loan). Net price is still ~60K.
However, he is unsure of CWRU at this time and debating between UMich/UIUC/U-Washington :man_shrugging:t5:

My son’s net price after scholarships and federal unsubsidized loan is ~53K so I think we already have generous offer. We will visit the school this week on admit student day and see if it’s a good fit. His other option is Pitt and Stony Brook as OOS student. Pitt has similar price tag as CWRU as full paid OOS student. We all like Pitt after visiting last year. He got scholarship from SB so it is 12K cheaper than above options, plus it’s closer to home. Also a good option. We are OK if he choose either one option to commit.
