He has applied to U of M LSA school(Cognitive science) and is in-state for him.
My D got in BME. 4.41 weighted gpa, 3.81 unweighted, senior year 8 AP/IB course all weighted, Total 12AP/IBs, Neuroscience research experience + recommendation from external research advisor, Non-profit founder. 806 community hours in high school. Strong ECs. Test Optional. 26.5k merit University scholarship + federal loans + work study. Visited CWRU in junior year spring break, summer did further research and contacted admission on questions. CWRU has been one of her top 3 choices since Junior year. Thats pretty much it.
My D got accepted into BME. However, thereâs an option to begin in Spring with one semester in Madrid and the rest in Cleveland. The alternative is to opt for Early Decision (ED). We are currently discussing these options. Is this similar for most of us here?
We havenât conducted any campus tours yet. Weâre from the Bay Are. My D is interested in the premed path. Do you believe Case will help her achieve her goals? Thanks for all your assistance.
Case doesnt accept by majors so she can explore majors/minors after joining. Its excellent for research and hospitals nearby is a definitely a plus too. She should visit to get a feel. I donât know about whats the benefit for case in asking candidates to join Spring and what education, boarding and lodging looks like for your daughter in the spring. Also what will she do in the fall? Itâs also new to me that a college can ask to convert a EA application to ED, but I guess they are trying to fill more folks with Early plan. Whether she accepts ED or not depends on whether case is a first choice for your daughter, can she afford the college, and which other colleges she had planned to applyâŠfor example does she want to wait for UC results? Cannot give any advice without knowing more details. But please visit the campus, she can talk to admission officers and the decide whatever she is comfortable with.
My son was accepted and I have a question about aid. His acceptance letter listed a $38K scholarship, and his financial aid letter also included a $11K CWRU Grant. Am I correct in my understanding that CWRU is offering him $49K total in aid?
Stats:
4.0 UW
highest rigor
1510 SAT
6 APs (most available at his school)
2/70 possibly 1/70 class rank
Decent ECs, but no non-profits, published papers, Nobel prizes, etc
Sounds like it. When you ran the NPC, hopefully it showed $49K off.
Call financial aid in the AM to confirm.
Congrats to your student.
thank you; needed to hear this today as we thought Case shall be a target school for DD who has unweighted 4.0 GPA, 11 AP, National Merit Commended, first author of a research paper (international); we didnât visit physically but opened emails; very disappointed to learn that DD gets a deferral.
Perhaps theyâll offer you an âED2â opportunity. They might believe you are a safety for them - and by waiting on you, they can see if youâd commitâŠor fall off.
They have a poor yield and might be looking to improve it.
Or - perhaps thereâs something that while you feel makes the student a fit, they didnât see it.
Itâs hard to be objective with your own studentâŠ
With a background like you describe, your student will have plenty of options.
I was deferred EA as a biochemistry major on the pre-med track.
GPA 4.0 UW/4.14 W, 1540 SAT, 10 APs (5s on all).
Extracurriculars are solid but nothing crazy: medical service trip to Belize, president and founder of healthcare careers and Red Cross clubs, published an article in JHUâs Pre-Collegiate Global Health Review, tutored in English and math, student government, attended a molecular biology of cancer workshop.
Awards are also solid but nothing crazy: National merit semifinalist, AP scholar with distinction, Cum Laude, and several school awards (biology award, highest honor roll)
Hmmm - I would rate those above solid!!!
Congrats on the NMSF (and soon to be NMF) - you can cash in if you want.
Great studentâŠmaybe theyâll come back at you with theâŠif you ED.
Or youâll have tons of other options (with NMSF) - from full rideâŠto you name it!!!
Youâll have a lot of success ahead.
Congrats.
D24 was offered Spring admission but will be admitted to Fall if she ED II. Not sure why they are doing that. Case obviously thinks she is qualified to be accepted. Yield management perhaps? I did not realize Case is on of the institution who is overly concern about their yield.
With a terrible yield (15%), maybe they want to fix it.
If she decides to commit - congrats. If not, good luck elsewhere.
In the same situation and a bit put off by it. And my son even got a scholarship offer. He doesnât plan to switch to ED2 or the 1 semester in Madrid option. Is there any disadvantage of starting in Spring in terms of coursework? Are most of courses offered in both semesters?
BTW, not even a single âcongratulationsâ in the decision letter. After reading the first couple of sentences, he thought it was a rejection letter. Oh wellâŠ
I would check the class schedule for the major.
Look to see avail of classes. You can also discuss with the department. Make sure youâll have options.
Good luck.
Itâs so weird. Schools spend an absolute fortune on marketing, yet it seems like much of the âofficialâ communication from the admissions offices rarely if ever passes across the desk of someone skilled at communications. It (probably?) shouldnât matter, but itâs off putting.
Reminds me - we got a âto the parents ofâ letter from a small LAC to which our kid was accepted. It was a super safety and kid has other offers so wouldnât go there at this point regardless, but the letter was a wall of text in like 10 point font with practically zero L/R top/bottom margins, and the print was more gray than black. Sorry but you expect 50ish year old people to read that thing? Not happening.
We had exactly the same feeling. My kid was offered admission with merit if he commits, but not a single note of congratulations. We loved Case, and it was one of our top choices, though not something that we want to commit. Canât blame the university, but it left a bad taste for us.
Yes, we are put off too. Daughter also got scholarship of $26.5k a year but wonât be switching to ED2. Itâs not one of her top choices but when we receive all the acceptances, she may very well choose to go there.
Sadly, Case is off the table for her which is unfortunate as it is a good school and does have the major she intends to study.
My son was deferred (chemical engineering). 1550 SAT 4.0UW, 11 AP, job, several extracurriculars but no huge leadership or national awards earned. Demonstrated interest - toured, read every email and would click on the links as well to read it, attended about 3 virtual sessions, emailed his admissions officer regarding a question. Itâs one of his top choices so weâre hoping he has a chance in the RD round.
Did they offer an ED option?
Best of luck - I hope it works out for him.
Itâs clearly nothing he did. Seems an outstanding candidate and tons of schools will want him.
My DS was deferred and we are frustrated. His older sibling just graduated from Case so family connection too. Loved this school. He toured and emailed admissions counselor been on mailing list for two years. Applied to music school etc. this was his top choice. 4th in his class of over 400. 4.0 uw 4.6 w gpa. 34 act. Drum major for multiple years. High music honors at state level. Eagle Scout. Community service. 9APs and dual enrollment. Southeast. We actually stopped him from taking act again as to not improve and hit their yield protect. Ridiculous that you have to try and find the sweet spot for the school.
Absurd how bad these decisions were this year after reading through this thread. Not sure what they are trying to do. Maybe protect their awful yield?
He was given the option to apply RD or ED by 1/22. Iâm so angry I feel like telling him to forget it and move on. Could go to UNC-CH for half the cost in state and more well known and regarded school.
