Case is really hard to figure out. I agree, there seems to be a sweet spot. They seem to either offer high stats kids lot of merit $$$ or defer them. My guess is they will waitlist him after RD and them offer him a spot when they’re sure he will attend, even throwing in some merit $$$.
FWIW, given your DS has a spot at UNC-CH, I’m not sure why you’d want to continue to play Case’s games.
I think the sweet spot is good applicants who have shown demonstrated interest but have 1-2 disqualifying factors that Case believes will prevent them from getting into “top” schools. Of course this doesn’t apply to everyone, but with me, I think having a lower gpa helped (which is absurd to say).
So Case just came back to my kid and upped the merit offer. It went from “high” to “even higher.” They say it was some sort of error in the calculation for “a small number of students.”
Anyone else get this? Real error or is this them continuing to woo?
I’m guessing if they said it was an error, it was likely an error.
Schools do come back - there was a thread on this last year listing which - but it’s likely closer to the end (another reason at privates to wait b4 acceptimg if possible), and they’ll tell you they’re offering more out of their own goodwill.
Not in error - which doesn’t really help them from a “taking credit” POV.
I’m way more cynical than that. Until I hear from someone who received merit originally but did not get a bump owed to this “error” I will assume it’s not actually an error.
@DroidsLookingFor I got that same email, bumped my scholarship from $37.5k to $40.5k (as if that makes a difference to a $90k a year school) and I thought the exact same thing. The more I think about it though the more likely I think it was an error. Assuming the average adjusted cost of attendance for a prospective student whose scholarship increased is paying 50k, they’d need to convince 1 prospective student to attend for every 17-ish kids they gave additional scholarship to who were planning on attending anyway to make a profit off of this “error”. I don’t know how the math works out, but if they thought that was a worthwhile risk then maybe it was intentional, but I’m leaning towards it being an actual error. But who knows, It’s already a scam they charge 90k a year for an (albeit good but not even top 50) school, and I’ve heard of other schools making similar “errors”.
I won’t specify but our amount was changed by something other than $2500. Our award is otherwise in the same range as the two people who’ve posted a $2500 increase. So, whatever the ‘error’ was it was not uniform because neither is the ‘correction.’
If I’m a school and want you to have more, I wouldn’t say error - I don’t get credit.
And colleges definitely do raise offers (maybe not a ton but some do and I started a thread on this last year) - I think it happens closer to the May 1 deadline.
But it would be silly(IMHO) to note an error and give more money!!
Everyone wants credit for - showing how much they’d love to have you!!!
Anyway - the bill went down - and that’s a good thing for those who attend!!!
And it’s better than the other errors schools make - where they send you an acceptance and then three days later say - ooops. That was a mistake. Now that’s an error
In the abstract, probably. But in mid-January? TBH coming back to us now and saying “hey we love you so much, here’s a little more money” would land with me as desperate.
Or how about the Vandy error, sending a letter that says NMFs will get $65,000 discount a year when they really meant $6,000. Now that’s an error.
And BTW, my kiddo did get the upped merit aid email, an additional $2,500 a year for a total of $32,500 discount. I don’t care if it’s an error or not, happy to take the extra money.
We’ll be visiting for admitted students’ day at the end of March. Looking forward to seeing the campus as we haven’t visited yet. Any suggestions for those who have visited? I wanna see the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and one of my favorite jewelry designers is located there as well, so there might be some shopping in order too!
