Case Western Reserve Early Action / Early Decision for Fall 2024 Admission

Not sure they are even coming out today.

congrats - a couple of suggestions for when you are there( stay at the courtyard it is closest)
i have a freshman at CWRU and she was not able to get to campus until admitted student day as well.

RR hall is a must( if one of you plays or sings they have a jam session area where you can play music - that part opens at 12
The art museum next to the school is very good. There are some good restaurants walking distance in the little italy area. And the fancy french place on campus is pretty good.
Mitchells ice cream is a must. my wife and other daughter loved the ā€œchristmas story houseā€.

The campus is a bit odd as it sort of has 2 halves but it really makes sense after a while. She was favoring another school until her visit and flipped. The student body seemed more friendly and collaborative.

Hi! Hope you don’t mind me asking a quick hotel question. My admitted student and I are visiting next weekend for a series of events largely housed in the Maltz Performing Arts Center. I had originally booked the Courtyard Marriott so we could get the experience of being right in the center of campus, but the school has suggested staying at the Residence Inn a mile away as it’s closer to the CWRU theater and my student will have some late night/ early morning commitments there. We won’t have a car, so will walk/uber during our stay. Do you think we should stick with Courtyard or better to go with their suggestion? (Looking to be in the best location for getting a sense of the area/campus.) Thanks!

i don’t think either would be problematic - the residence inn is closer to the performing art center and the courtyard is probably closer to restaurants you should be able to walk from either

Thanks for sharing your insight!

Thanks so much for the detailed reply and recommendations!

I didn’t know about the ā€œchristmas story houseā€ being in Cleveland. I might have to extend our stay a day to get in all of these things.

A few questions, if you have the time/inclination:

  • admitted students’ day: It seems they are scheduled for 2 days, is there a lot of overlap in programming? Not sure we need two days.
  • school spirit. One of my kid’s ā€œwantsā€ is a school with strong school spirit, how is it at Case? He’d also like a place where the kids have fun, not necessarily a party school, but like to blow off steam at times.
  • Frats/sorority life: He’s also interested in looking into the frats, any thoughts on the system at Case?
  • dorms: I’ve heard some negative things about the dorms at Case, which won’t be a deal breaker, just wanted to know what to expect.
  • class size and virtual classes: Mine will be a Mech E major, any thoughts on how big/small the classes are? Some school are still doing virtual classes, I’m hoping that’s not the case at Case.
  • professors, how has your kid liked the professors? do they seem supportive, interested in teaching, or more research focused?
  • and finally, how does your kid like it? happy with their choice?

And you mention that the campus is a bit odd as it has 2 halves, what does that mean exactly?

Thanks so much for your (or your kid’s) help! This was sort of a late addition to my kid’s list, which is why we didn’t visit, but it really looks like a great option for him. Still waiting on many RD and deferred applications, so it will come down to the wire for us, so trying to gather as much info as possible before we visit.

a bit to unpack there -
I think there is some overlap on the 2 days but we didn’t mind
I remember this thread that really holds up on some of your other questions

there is Greek life but mine did not partake as of now - so no comment
My D does like her professors - but small sample size so far. All of her classes are in person and other than math were 50 or fewer.
they give a realistic tour of the dorms - so you can decide - she doesn’t complain
she is very happy there - you can PM me if you need follow up

I’m sure it is just the way they are phrasing things, but my son who was deferred EA (the ā€œregularā€ deferral, not the ā€œswitch to ED2 and you’ll be admittedā€ deferral) received his second email today that sounds like he was admitted.

Last week he got an email telling him to make sure he signed up for an admitted student event… :disappointed:

It is making me anxious! (My son is the most laid back person in the world, so he isn’t anxious at least. ā€œI’ll find out when they update my portal in March, Mom.ā€)

I JUST saw the same thing in an email sent to us - my kiddo was deferred as well…

We also keep getting emails like…

  • come for a visit
  • it’s not too late to apply for scholarships
  • check out these great opportunities at case…

They’re a very low yielding school - under 15% and take out ED, really low. Maybe they are trying to figure out who is really serious ?

If you don’t get in they’ll likely WL you. Last year 10.6k were admitted and 11.6k offered the WL.

D24 received email with the exact same wording and she is also in the ā€œregularā€ deferral. I am not reading too much into it as this notice only talks about impact to the financial aid decision(merit or need) due to FAFSA processing delays. We submitted CSS profile info back in December and this notice confirmed that they have that info.

just received the following update which confirms my understanding

You recently received an email regarding the next steps in the financial aid process. Some of the content of the email may have been confusing regarding your admission status.

To clarify, you will receive a decision from the Office of Undergraduate Admission around March 16

Are all the EA deferrals getting spammed with CWRU email again? We applied RD and not ED2 with the deferral response. I know we won’t find out until March 16th. But, DD24 received her first rejection after an EA deferral at Chicago and I’m getting a bit chippy about how much marketing these schools send out when they’re going to reject 95% of the applicants. She got a book, a wall map, stickers and t-shirt from Chicago only to be rejected on her ED2 application. Has terrific stats and ECs. Has a few senior awards now.

would you be willing to share her stats?

Academic All-State award
Regents Academic Excellence Award
35 ACT
4.00 UW GPA, 1st in 500 students
Four years varsity letter athlete
Senior officer

Plus a million ECs and four years of Engineering, 5 AP classes and four concurrent university classes.

Yikes…where else is she looking study? My kiddo has similar stats and is just waiting for the March Madness to finally know where he’ll end up.

Droid1 has long since been accepted EA with a bunch of $.

Droid2 applied RD.

We know Case isn’t shy with postal mail and email.

Commenting to note that Droid2 is now getting emails for admitted students, e.g the Unity Banquet. The email says:

ā€œThe annual banquet takes place the Friday evening of our two-day Admitted Student Program, which you are also invited to attend…[snip]…Droid2, we look forward to your presence at the Unity Banquet and the Admitted Student Program.ā€

Is that a straight up telegraph? An oops? I mean I do generally expect Droid2 to be admitted given Droid1’s results. But this seems surprising.

That one seems even more specialized than the one my S24 got. But about two weeks ago now he got an email that said (something like) ā€œmake sure you register for an admitted student eventā€!

I wonder if they have a new person writing the promotional emails this year or if they are always like this.

Someone about to get fired :joy:

Which school was it a year or two ago that sent out some thousands of Acceptance emails in error?
