Casey Anthony?

This case is the first time I’ve ever watched Nancy Grace and will probably be the last. I find her demeanor soooo annoying. She’s all raised voice and indignation, and that makes it hard for me to listen to what she’s actually saying. I watch now because she seems to have the most complete coverage. (Another topic for another thread is why so many people on cable news seem to be shouting all the time, even though they have perfectly functional microphones.)

Some HLN talking(shouting) head called this the trial of the century last night. (And of course, to paraphrase the line from “Ragtime,” there are 89 years to go). The HLN folks are self-promoters, of course, but I don’t see why this trial has attracted that degree of attention. What is HLN going to do with itself after a verdict?

Trials of the century usually seem to be about pressing social issues (Saccho and Vanzetti) or, still more often, a wealthy defendant. This time around, it seems to be the fact that Nancy Grace doesn’t want to talk about anything else.

Nancy Grace is the most irritating person on TV. She is constantly screaming and she is rude to her guests.

Parent56

Casey got the tattoo in early July of 2008…right after Caylee died.

I don’t support the death penalty for Casey for the reason that she isn’t a danger to society. She’s not going to murder anyone while in prison…and it’s doubtful that she would again if she got out (although if she has anymore kids, those kids need to be taken from her!)

The purpose of the DP is to prevent the person from doing it again. I doubt she’s a risk.

If the defense was counting on the “too pretty for jail” defense they should have dolled her up a whole lot better.

true…but they’re trying to downplay the “party girl” look.

When the prosecution insisted that the “young Casey” pic be removed from the Defense’s poster, they should have recommended that pic be replaced with either the pic of Casey dressed only in an American flag…or Casey dressed in some kind of casino-girl get-up for Halloween.

Re Nancy Grace – Definitely a Mean Girl…Can you imagine how her kids’ teachers will dread parent-teacher conferences someday LOL?

I just can’t stop watching her coverage of this trial even though she makes me nuts.

I think that Casey might be a threat to others. There’s nothing that indicates that her pathology is directed just to small children - after all, look at her thefts. If someone gets in her way, I think anything is a possiblity.

thank you mom2ck!

I was just reading the jury instructions (isn’t the internet wonderful?) and learned that to be convicted of first degree murder you don’t need premeditation. That is certainly one criteria, but the other is called “felony murder.” Let me quote:

To me, this makes it much much more likely the jury will be able to reach a guilty first degree murder verdict. If Casey was only trying to sedate Caylee, but accidently killed her in the process (of abusing her) then she is still guilty of murder 1.

(I also see this was discussed/explained back in post #358, and maybe other times as well, but nothing quite like seeing it spelled out in the jury instructions)

Emphasis added.

How the heck would this work? How do you kill someone while attempting to abuse them? I would think that if the victim died, the abuse was accomplished rather effectively.

^^thank you…

^that was meant for post #607

that was one of the ones i thought fit…was surprised when judge read that it didnt need premeditation…i thought baez tried hard to get rid of any premeditation stuff…but doesnt matter after all

*Re Nancy Grace – Definitely a Mean Girl…Can you imagine how her kids’ teachers will dread parent-teacher conferences someday LOL? *

Actually, Nancy Grace’s on-air and professional persona is very different from her normal “at home” persona. When you realize that Renee Rockwell is her best, best friend (and she gives poor defense-lawyer Renee such a hard time on the air), you realize that Nancy must be very different in her private life.

Renee’s Facebook profile pic is of her AND Nancy.

I always disliked Nancy Grace, but right after she had her twins who were either preemies or very sick, she was very emotional and distraught and showed a side of her thst was so vulnerable, it changed my mind about her.

*nd learned that to be convicted of first degree murder you don’t need premeditation. That is certainly one criteria, but the other is called “felony murder.” *

YES!

Death during the commission of a felony is “felony murder.” Even if you NEVER had any intention of killing anyone.

If you hold up a bank, and your gun accidentally goes off and you kill the teller, that’s FELONY murder.

If you commit arson and burn down a home and you THINK that no one is inside, but someone is and that person dies, then that is felony murder.

If you commit a felony and during a police chase, you hit another car and kill someone, that is felony murder.

Even if you are just the driver of a get-away car and the others kill someone, you are charged with felony murder.

so, if do felony child abuse to a child (like giving them chloroform or Xanax or whatever) and the child accidentally dies, that’s felony murder.

So, you don’t need pre-med to have first degree murder with capital punishment as an option.

*I think that Casey might be a threat to others. There’s nothing that indicates that her pathology is directed just to small children - after all, look at her thefts. If someone gets in her way, I think anything is a possiblity. *

I agree that she’s a danger in regards to theft, etc. I was speaking of danger as in death. She has no history of physical violence with peers/adults. Caylee was a defenseless child. She should get LWOP. She won’t hurt anyone in jail.

I agree with NJres.

The other thing I want to say is that my heart absolutely breaks for Casey’s parents and for Lee. Watching them has torn at me day after day.

When I say what I did in post 614 I have not forgotten the biggest victim, Caylee. Such a precious baby killed. So many people would have adopted and loved her like her grandparents loved and took care of her. Senseless.

I agree with this. Nancy Grace’s on-air personality is just schtick. She IS annoying and hyperbole could be her middle name, but I don’t believe for a minute that she’s like that in real life. Ever notice that when she cuts off a guest or belittles their opinion, they never object or talk back? They know that it’s just part of the show, at least that’s how it appears to me.

But doesn’t that still reflect on her character? Her show is ostensibly “news”, so shouldn’t she be more concerned with presenting facts and probing issues than with her “schtick”? Hence, Cable News Network? [Edit: Oops, I meant Headline News.]

Not that she’s not good at what she does. It would just appeal to me more if it were less sensationalistic and more thoughtful. If there is something thoughtful presented, it’s lost on me because I can’t get past the sensationalism.

HLN person just mentioned this…federal judge ruled recently that florida death penalty is unconstitutional:

[Federal judge strikes down Florida’s death penalty](http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/state/federal-judge-strikes-down-floridas-death-penalty-1556022.html)

wonder what that will mean if they recommend it?

I agree, mantori. There is no place for schtick in journalism, in my opinion. She’s unprofessional and clearly biased in her ‘reporting’ on just about every one of the sensational cases on which she ‘reports’. I don’t care how nice a person she may be in real life. Her behavior on tv is beyond the pale. It’s unfortunate that Jeffrey Toobin doesn’t appear to be reporting on the Anthony case, or at least, not that I’ve seen. I haven’t watched much until the past week so I may be wrong about that. He’s intelligent, professional, well-educated, and a well-respected lawyer and journalist, and doesn’t seem to find it difficult to be unbiased and impartial in his comments on trials. As I mentioned earlier, these HLN pundits are all annoying, and Loraine Velez-Mitchell seems to be a Nancy Grace wannabe and is even more annoying than Nancy. Seriously, is it necessary to shout every single word that comes out of your mouth?!

^Agree with your comments about Velez-Mitchell, mom.
