Cat Lovers Thread - 2024

My ginger cat named “Ginger” by the shelter is the sweetest little girl, yep, she’s a girl. Calmest temperment and then super playful with her adopted sibling. However, she does frighten very easily - we think this is from her first household who turned her into the shelter after declawing ALL 4 claws!

All four? Yikes. Poor kitty.

I am looking for a male, orange kitten. Just putting it out there . . .

Yes, all four. Of course she has never been an outside cat. But, can’t imagine why someone would pay the money to remove all 4 sets of claws and then give the cat to the shelter. Apparently there were alergies and a big ole mean dog that didn’t like the cat.

We are swimming in kittens here in the South!

I did pay $40 for a big bag of cat litter a week ago…

Maybe this belongs in the say it here thread, but oh well…
Kitten has progressed from adorable little boy to evil teen!

My husband said we should put big pots on the stove so the kitten didn’t jump up…

Didn’t work out like he planned

Linke the counters / stove with aluminum foil - they’ll only jump once or twice.

Filling those pots with water might help too. Although it will splash…

This worked for us when we had this issue a couple cats ago. The kitchen looked crazy for a few days but our kitty learned pretty quickly to avoid those areas.

It just now occurs to me that in 30+ years of having cats in our home, only that one kitty jumped on the counters/table. No others.

Bengals love water, so it’s not a deterrent.

We had a diabetic bengal and she kept jumping on counters and the stove because she always thought she was starving. Unfortunately, aluminum foil never bothered her. We may try it for him, but I won’t hold my breath.

Our cats “typically” use the counter as a launching pad to the high cabinets or top of fridge, but this little guy (he’s only 4 months) hasn’t tried to go that high yet.

Depends on the kitty. Each is an individual! :grinning_cat_with_smiling_eyes:

Same with us! Amazing how some cats absolutely won’t get on the kitchen counters and others want to live up there. None of my current cats have any interest in countertops but boy do they expect to sit/lounge on all the furniture! And, make us move if we are in their spot, particularly if it’s a sunny spot!

They truly are all individuals with their own preferences and quirks and tolerance. I’ve had cats who love water but would only jump on the bathroom counters or in the tub (which I didn’t mind and I’d run the water for them), cats that behaved like our dogs (fetching, opening doors, etc.), cats that were old and grouchy until a baby joined our household and suddenly that baby was theirs, cats that were snuggly and cats more aloof,… we’ve had it all! But I absolutely have never allowed cats on any surface where food is prepared or served. I love my cats but no way, no how! Hahaha! I guess humans also have our own preferences and quirks and tolerance levels.

Well yes, of course each kitty is an individual, but bengals are known for loving water (there are many funny videos if you google “bengal in shower” or similar), which is a trait not shared by many other cat breeds.

Yeah I agree - it’s a tolerance I’ve “grown into” and I am NOT fond of it. I try to keep them off, but haven’t been 100% successful.

Whatever works for you! Or, whatever works for your kitties and you can tolerate. After all, they rule the house.

There was a few months I had a family heirloom four-poster bed practically wrapped in aluminum foil and towels (anything to protect the posts)… that was my biggest challenge, not the kitchen counters. We introduced a young rescue cat into our household and he was cray-cray. And our sweet, easy going, adult ragdoll picked up his bad habits… probably in a double effort to get away from him and punish us for disturbing her kingdom. They eventually ended up loving each other but that was a tough 6 months. Ugh. That was the only time I seriously considered de-clawing. My vet saw me in tears a few times while I struggled through various solutions.
