CC and FB

I simply cannot understand why I can with one touch, post a thread from here on to Facebook. I find that to be so weird and sort of invasive of privacy. Not that any of us are “out” here, but still. What is the purpose of this casual link to FB?

To assist anyone insufficiently savvy to manage to copy the URL by hand before pasting into FB? There’s no reasonable expectation of privacy on a public forum.

Right. It is just one more click to “highlight, right click to copy and then paste” on FB or anywhere else.

I have never even considered doing this. Has anyone else?

But also yes, it’s a public board so…post at your own risk! ( or better yet, with a good alias!)

Maybe I’m dumb --where is the link to click to post something from here onto FB?

Maybe for posting in education groups on facebook?

@raclut, true, that could be it.

Down below a post with flag, agree, like, helpful then the FB icon.

I think it’s awful, tbh. This place is so strict about posting links and even quotes longer than 3-4 sentences, but it lets people post our comments to FB with a single touch. It’s intrusive and I can’t imagine any meaningful number of CC users actually wants this functionality. I hate it.

I never noticed it before but now that I see how easy it is for people to share to fb I don’t want to post/comment any more. At least the other way takes a few extra steps.

When was that added? Has it been there for a long time?

It has been there for quite a while. I don’t care for it either…

How is this College CONFIDENTIAL if we link to Facebook?

? ? ?

Wow, I never noticed it either. Yep, I’m in favor of taking it down.

It was added with the January 2014 update and not popular at the time. It was described as making it easier to do something that could already be done.

So if anyone clicks it – not just the person who wrote the post – that post goes to FB, or does the entire thread?

I think it would link to the thread. So the entire thread could be read.

Keep in mind that anyone can read on CC even without having an account and logging in, right? Logging in just allows you to post.

CC is a public forum. You can keep your posts “private” by limiting the personal information you share that would link you to who you are.

For the record, I’ve never seen a CC thread show up in my Facebook feed, and I have a number of friends who are active on both sites…

Ditto.

So how does this work - a CC member who uses the FB button to post a CC thread is essentially saying, “Hey - I, Firstname Lastname, want you all to read this.” Doesn’t that essentially identify the member even more than it might identify other CCers on the thread? I know people alter their names on FB and adjust the privacy settings so that sometimes, maybe, the entire universe can’t read their posts. Still, I can’t think of a good reason to hit that button.

You can (theoretically) log on with your FB ID, I think. Which completely defeats the Confidential part. I wonder if anyone has ever actually done it.
