CC as a support group

I’ve notice that lately I’ve been using CC more and more, even though my son’s next school RD do not come out until April 1st. I’ve realized that it has became a support group of sorts for me. I’ve noticed that other parents are posting in multiple forums and I was wondering if they were feeling the same way.

Absolutely!!

Let me tell you, the parents of the college class of '13 (f/k/a/ the parents of the HS class of '09) have talked each other down from more ledges than I can count.

Absolutely! As the tension mounts, this is the safe place to be. I just want to fast forward another month and have it all be over. At least I hope it will be.

So glad to hear that I am not alone. My kids make fun of me saying that college advisors do not like CC; however thanks to this site my niece was able to see her ACT scores early ( thanks to the famous glitch), find out when EA results were out and of course suffer with all the parents while our kids decide where they want to go. The best part: I have a junior too so I will be sticking around for quite sometime.

Of course some college advisors do not like it… judicious use of CC can certainly serve as a replacement for a paid college counselor, and can also put some pressure on school guidance counselors who are not doing their jobs as well as they could have.

Absolutely it is a support group. Just look at how many of us are still here when we don’t have any kids in the college pipeline! I have one more still in high school, but spend time in the Parents Forum and Parent Cafe because I enjoy the topics, and the quality of the discussions. I’ll probably continue to lurk around the cafe forever. CC, and the Parent Cafe in particular, is one of the few spots on the internet where trolls are kept on short leashes, polite discourse is enforced, politics are kept in check, and I learn something new almost every time I visit.

Yep, been here forever. LOVE IT. Mine are now in grad school, med school, additional degrees and still come here, helps out more than I can say.

Kat

I found CC when my child was a 6th grader; she graduates with her BS this May. There are lots of helpful topics/posts for all stages and phases and interests.

And I thought that I was here for too long… I’ve just hear about this kid in BU that died after drinking too much during a frat initiation ceremony. Did any of your kids joined (or is planning to join) a fraternity? How safe are they?

Such amazing slants on so many topics…CC is my one stop shopping place.
College admissions-check.
Campus housing-check
Then the really fun stuff: kitchen countertops, jeans, wines, Kindles, Netflix, old photos, dating in middle age, diet and exercise, what fun!

I use cc as a support group even though I’m only in college. I’ve just gone through a lot of things that my friends my age have never even remotely come to close to dealing with so I turn to those here for support. Especially about college related issues because my own parents barely graduated from high school and are at a complete loss when I ask them anything school related.

The CC parents forum and parents cafe has become a wonderful place for me to find intelligent conversation on any number of different topics. There are many kind and friendly folk to give you support when you need it.

I hesitate before telling H, that yet again, my news source is CC…that I heard something totally new, read an interesting article, ran into a great debate, talk to people that I neither know personally but find very interesting.

I am a long time lurker who only recently started posting. I have found the advice and support wonderful.

Gouf - I can relate. My H roles his eyes every time I tell him that I learned another pearl of wisdom from CC!

My kids graduated from college in 2007. I’m still here. I’m not sure whether that’s a comment on my real life, or what.

Just another addict joining the group confession here. ;-)

Son graduated in 2011, no plans to leave.
No doubt this does say something about my real life but I don’t care if it does!

I hang around reading all kinds of threads and post on few but this site has been a great place to learn alot and to see that we are not alone in our struggles and accomplishments. It has been especially helpful for us since we are Canadians with our D in a US college and it has really helped to read so many helpful things that I would not have known about the US system. My D will be heading off for her Master in the fall of 2013 and I know it will be a whole new set of struggles, not sure if she will stay in the States or come back to Canada yet but either way I will probably keep watching here and adding my 2 cents every once in a while. Thanks everyone

Yep. Over the years I have gotten ideas/advice here about colleges, summer programs, passports, weight loss, cars, and parenting (to name only a few things). At first, years ago, my kids thought it was kind of weird to ask questions on CC. After awhile, when they wanted to know something, they would say, why don’t you ask CC about that? I don’t think any of them have used CC themselves, strangely, but they have definitely received a lot of value from it. Overall, a very nice, supportive and smart group of people here.
