Hi, I was wondering what the best and what kinds of cell phone services there are in C-Ville. I can actually get a 2-Year plan now and get a sweet camera phone! Any suggestions? What’s the best deal plan for a person who likes to talk at night?

Also, I got in ED and have to decide where I’m gonna live! Can you guys list any Pros/Cons for an SEAS student? I head the old dorms are “cooler”?

It really depends. Like Globalist said, Old Dorms are right across from where all your E-school classes are. I live in New Dorms, which is where I requested to be, and I’m really glad I ended up here. I’m a little biased, but in my experience Old Dorms are preppier and Greeker. We still have polos and stuff in New Dorms, but the Lilly Pulitzer preps almost uniformly live in Old Dorms.

All the Old Dorm buildings are done hall-style; there are around 20 double rooms off of one hall, whereas most of the New Dorm buildings are suite-style, with 5 double rooms off of a living room area with couches and stuff. Supposedly, if you live at Old Dorm you know more people but you don’t know them as well, and at New Dorm you know fewer people but get really close to them. I can’t really judge how well this works because I’m in a hall-style building in New Dorms. My dorm and the other building like it are among all the suite-style buildings, but are done hall-style; they were built much more recently than all the other first-year dorms, with bigger rooms and air-conditioning. Old Dorms are prettier on the outside, and it’s nice how they open up onto a quad. New Dorms have a quad-type thing on a hill, and some of the dorms are sort of in the middle of the woods. I haven’t been in an Old Dorm room except for during my tour senior year in high school, but apparently New Dorm rooms are nicer in general.

I’m also a first-year in UVA and my preference is towards New Dorms than Old dorms. Like Ahava said earlier, the Old Dorms are more preppier and suited to the Greek population than New Dorms. Another thing to note is Old Dorms aren’t as diverse as the New Dorms, in fact, it’s fairly homogenous in Old Dorms compared to New Dorms. I live in a suite-style dorm in New Dorms and it’s nice since you’re able to develop close relationships with your mates in the suite. The rooms in New Dorms are fairly large compared to those at Old Dorms. I’m probably biased but definitely take a visit sometime, check both dorms out and see what you like.

I don’t think Old Dorms were overly homogenous. I visited my friend who lived there and his roommate was from Brazil, and in his hall lived a guy from Haiti and guys from different parts of the country. I also had friends of different races live in Old Dorms. Perhaps New Dorms seem more diverse because most of the athletes live in Tuttle.

My Verizon works well for me. I have heard that if you have Sprint and move, you can get them to update your phone, which will improve your reception. Verizon is also good because of the “in” plan, so you don’t pay for minutes when you are calling another Verizon person. I believe that Cingular has a similar plan…?
