Can you suggest what kind of cell phone you’re using in UVA (iphone?) campus to communicate with your parent or others and use this phone or some other tools to do the time management. Do you use any software or just a calendar notebook. Thanks.

I bought a time management planner from the UVa bookstore; inside, it has spaces for you to plan out the hours of your day as opposed to just empty boxes for homework. I sit down Sunday and write down my meetings, volunteering events, ECs, classes, etc. That way, I know what my week looks like and when I need to get my work done. I have a mac so I also use iCal a lot. After I’m done filling in my week, I open up iCal and crossreference to make sure I haven’t missed anything. There’s a space at the bottom and on the side of the planner to write down homework and readings; I write it there. This process, amazingly, only takes about 20 minutes. But it saves me a lot of headache during the week. You may not (probably shouldn’t be) as busy as I was this past semester. Take it easy on the ECs and classes your first semester and get adjusted. But that’s my time management process. It works really well for me and helps keep me on task; if I’m tired and don’t feel like doing homework, but I really don’t have time any other day, I’ll just glance at my book and it 'll motivate me. All nighters, no want.

As for phone, iPhone is fine. A lot of people have it. In all honesty, all you need is a phone that can make phone calls (and/or texts). I have an LG Dare and love it. You should be more worried about the carrier. I have Verizon and it works EVERYWHERE. Verizon takes advantage of their towers and Alltel’s towers, so it’s great. AT&T is supposedly better, but I get service where AT&T customers don’t. I know a lot of people who have Verizon and AT&T, and Verizon works better from my experience.

Lots of great info there, DB! Hard to improve on all that information.

OP, I’ve been on AT&T for many years and have only encountered problems in two places: the tunnel “under” the Rotunda and an area south of here on Route 29 where there seems to be a dead zone. If you do a search of this forum, though, you will find threads from previous years about cell phones and information about reception in the residence halls (about which I’m not certain).

You don’t “need” a smart phone (my possibly outdated definition of “smart” being one that gives you email access), but I think most students find it helpful to have that.

I use AT&T and it works fine. I’ve run across some labs in Thornton that no one has service, Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint, and also it varies across phones. I’ve been in spots where other AT&T users have only two bars, whereas I have almost full service.

AT&T doesn’t have as good of a coverage compared to Verizon. There have been many places on Grounds where my friends who subscribe to other providers obtain better reception. AT&T works quite horribly in Newcomb, which is sad. And plus, they love taking so much money out of you especially when all the taxes and extra fees add up.

As for planning, I would suggest using Gmail Calendar I love it.

The only place I have difficulty in Newcomb is in the sandwhich room. Everywhere else, I’m fine
