Chance an Asian--Yale, Duke, Williams

@BatesParents2019 How can you make an assumption like that with absolutely no data to back it up? If what you’re saying is correct, Duke wouldn’t have higher average test scores than Williams and it most certainly does.

At my NE prep school, which sends a lot of kids to Ivies, Williams is considered easier to get into and less desirable than Duke and Brown (interestingly, less so than Amherst, which is considered elite). At 18% acceptance rate, Williams trails behind its elite LAC counterparts–namely Pomona and Amherst, so being small is really no excuse.

Yale- reach
duke- low reach
williams - low reach

You have solid chances, especially as a sophomore.

Duke - high match to low reach
Yale - mid reach
Williams - low reach

Ur SAT score is good. mm. Only take the AP classes interested in; don’t take them to get ur see elf admitted to a particular school. generally, 6 APs is the average at top tier schools so you are good there. in UR essay make sure to highlight the limitations of UR school.
yale: don’t know. it’s a difficult school to predict.
duke: Interested in language then you have a high chance for ED
williams: don’t know. difficult school to predict.

make sure u make UR passion appear through UR essays. I am really optimistic about you.

While I agree that chancing for top colleges is very rough, you have really good chances. Keep in mind, a lot of competitive schools require 2 SAT Subject Tests, so I would recommend taking a Literature one to show your passion.

Your stats are great. You definitely have a shot at all three. Many schools want two SAT subject tests. Have you considered the Latin SAT subject test or the literature one? A good score can only help you. Good luck!

@emilyskates @eakirk16 I’m a sophomore so I have yet to take any APs and most of my subject tests. Today I got my SAT latin score back: 780, which I’m retaking. I’m fairly confident that I’ll get an 800 on math II, also.

It really depends how well you do next year. If you can keep your grades and stats up, and maybe add a couple extracurriculars, you should be competitive anywhere. It’s just that at all these top schools the admission of top qualified candidates is so random, so if you don’t have a strong preference by senior year, you might want to try applying to a ton of different reach schools, of which at least one will more than likely accept you.
Yale: Reach (although you have as good a chance as anyone. Low reach if ED)
Duke: Low reach (Match if ED)
Williams: low reach/high match (Match if ED)
Good luck!

Jesus, don’t retake a 780!!!

Yale: High Reach (still great shot-but who knows with yale)
Duke ED: good chance
Duke RD: Reach
Williams ED: very good chance
Williams RD:accepted

I can’t say much about Williams, but I’d say you’re pretty competitive for Duke, and Yale, like all the other Ivies, is essentially a crapshoot as to whether or not you get in. Like another poster said, I HIGHLY recommend taking the SAT Literature test, and AP Lit next year (if it fits into your schedule, that is). Also, with all your writing accomplishments, I’m assuming you’re going to have a fantastic essay, so that should help you a lot. When you’re writing your essay, be sure to include that you’ve “taken every opportunity”, though your opportunities may be limited due to the school you go to and their scheduling issues. Good luck!

I think you have a decent shot for those schools. However, you need to diversify your ECs a little bit. I think Yale might be a bit of a reach simply because of that fact-- while you have an admirable focus on latin, you’re a bit lacking in other fields. BUT, latin combined with biology is a very positive aspect of your application. Your SAT score will help you with Duke and Williams, but not necessarily with Yale. If they’ve already accepted students from your school in the past, then they don’t need it necessarily to see if you’re a good fit. Duke, I’d say is a slight reach. Yale is a reach but it seems favorable because of your dedication to Latin (though it might turn out to be counterproductive in the end) but I’d say Williams is very possible.

Well, I’m an international student, so I can’t gauge exactly how good your ECs are, but they seem to be very good on face value. Your SAT score is top notch, so you don’t need to try it again. You have very good awards, so you got that going for you. All in all, I’d say a good match for Duke, a close to top candidate for Williams, but Yale, low reach, just because it’s a reach for anyone who applies (unless you won a noble prize lol).

You have a solid chance I think but you didn’t give your GPA. Honestly though you haven’t “started” anything, try to either get more ECs or start one!

IMPORTANT:

My weighted GPA is a 4.75, which is top 2% in a class of 600.

What is it unweighted? Top 2% is great. I wouldn’t woory about starting anything. But 11th grade is significantly harder than 10th. So keep up the good work. Those are reaches, but you have a solid app so far.

Yale is always going to be tough, but you’ll definitely still be competitive. I would say Duke is a good match (assuming another ~780 SAT II score) and I think Williams is a match as well, but you never know with liberal arts schools; they have weird acceptances as well. Nevertheless, you’re a great candidate for all

Are you a male? You seem to have a humanities focus, which would work in your favor as an Asian male, or Asian in general.

I’d say you a better chance of getting into Williams and Duke than not. Yale will be tough in any case, and I’ve seen URMs with about the same stats as you get deferred/rejected. But I still think you’ll get into at least one of the schools you’ve listed.

Yay an Asian with a penchant for humanities!! Love your ECs and stats, may want to add a few more ECs in the coming year and of course keep on going for GPA. Yale is feasible; they love writers and artsy people. Duke as well – I know my friend’s Asian older brother got into Duke for being a good writer. I’m not sure about Williams, but I’m assuming the same, as it is a liberal arts college. Good luck!
