chance me?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/787100-chance-me-please-i-will-chance-back-i-promise.html</a></p>

I find the chance posts a little dubious. We don’t know what the admissions committee will like and we can only compare against our own numbers.

That said, write an essay that no one else will write. Write something that is personal and that matters to you. It’s your chance to be more than just a SAT score. Make it matter.

I find it dubious that HS students who have not been accepted anywhere, but have memorized US News and Princeton Review data, find themselves authoritative enough to provide chance information to other HS students.

your GPA is on the low end, but you should apply anyway.

“I find it dubious that HS students who have not been accepted anywhere, but have memorized US News and Princeton Review data, find themselves authoritative enough to provide chance information to other HS students.”

I agree. I think that everyone that gives an opinion on someones “chance” at a University should be required to state their own SAT / GPA and and current status (attending such and such U or 1976 alum of _________ U). It’s not just the HS students that are expressing opinions without experience. I think most of the people that post “chance me” threads understand that the opinions they receive are just personal observations / opinions and not necessarily authoritative opinions. Just my opinion…

I’m a proud 2008 UVA Alum.

“I’m a proud 2008 UVA Alum.”
Well then your opinion counts! <grin></grin>

hehe, thanks!

Hey wahoomb, were you in-state?

Yep, I was when I applied (I still live in VA) so I guess I still am.

Have you listed your stats, becuase I would be glad to know, and if you dont mind me asking, what high school did you go to and what did you apply for?

Since you’re from California, you might be sought after. However, you should really hit at least 700 for all sections of the SAT. Any outstanding awards/activities? What HS do you attend?

Make sure your essay is absolutely amazing. I attend a high school in VA, and my English teacher told us that the Dean of Admissions has told her that the essays are the most important part, and that recommendations aren’t as important as other factors because (obviously) you’ll only ask people who like you to write them.

Im a freshman in Virginia, what should I be doing?

You are full of crap that essays get weighted the most out of the 6 factors admissions offices look at, or at least your english teacher is.

Go to Dean J’s blog: [Notes from Peabody: The UVA Application Process](http://uvaapplication.blogspot.com/), search for “essay” and see how many times she discusses the importance of the essay in UVA admissions. Given that most candidates for admission are coming in with extremely strong academic profiles, the essay is the best way to distinguish yourself. It’s a message that UVA is extremely consistent in delivering.

I’d encourage you to be more eloquent in the future SLightManifesto.

RE Essays

Numbers bleed together but people rarely write the same way. It really is your chance to be unique and to stand out from the applicants.

I am with Slight. Essays don’t have that much weight frankly. They entertain the adcom and that’s pretty much it. Grades and rigor of curriculum are the most important.

I, too, will put my money with SLight. I just looked at the naviance scattergrams for two high schools’ applicants to UVa. In each case, (weighted) GPA is an almost perfect predictor of whether the student is admitted. Unless essay quality happens to be very highly correlated with GPA, I must conclude that GPA is the most important determinant.
