Chance for academic scholarships with a 4.0?

Hey guys…

My Stats:

Transfer to: UCLA, UCSD or UCI

Cumulative GPA: 4.0

Major GPA: 4.0

Major: Psychobiology (UCLA), Human Biology (UCSD) or Biology (UCI)

Pre-Requisites: Will complete all pre-requisite classes for all of the majors listed above by Spring 2011 except one physics class

IGETC: Will be completed by Spring 2011

ECs: Decent, but nothing over the top

Essays: Should be pretty good

My Questions:

-Is it a guarantee or lock that I will get into UCLA for Psychobiology? If not, chance me.

-What is the likelyhood that I will be invited to compete for the Regents Scholarship, or other academic scholarships, at any, or all, of the above colleges?

Thank you all in advance for your input and please let me know if you need more information or details in regards to any of the topics above.

I wouldn’t say lock at UCLA or UCB but you are highly competitive and if you are accepted you should be invited to apply for regent scholarship. IIRC they send the invite to everyone above 3.9 last year.

I say pretty much locked to me. Just don’t mess up your essay or anything on your application.

As for Regents, it is only a maybe. I didn’t get invited but some of my other friends with lower stats did. It is a crapshoot =/

I thought regents was only for freshmen?

Thanks for all the input guys!

@SDhopeful: There is a Regents Scholarship for both transfer students and for freshman.

Are you a minority?

@rpicton: No, unfortunately I am not a minority as I know this would increase my chances for scholarship and admission.

Yeah it sucks. Hopefully one day the institutions won’t be racist and discriminatory towards whites. If they wanted to give everyone an equal chance, they should go by merit. I got invited to the regent scholarship but was denied. Even worse, at first it said I was accepted but it turned out to be a glitch in the system.

[California Proposition 209 (1996) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](1996 California Proposition 209 - Wikipedia)
Proposition 209 (also known as the California Civil Rights Initiative) is a California ballot proposition which, upon approval in November 1996, amended the state constitution to prohibit public institutions from considering race, sex, or ethnicity. It had been supported and funded by the California Civil Rights Initiative Campaign, led by University of California Regent Ward Connerly. Co-Chair of the Campaign was law professor Gail Heriot, who is currently a member of the United States Commission on Civil Rights. The initiative was opposed by affirmative action advocates and supporters. Proposition 209 was voted into law on 5 November 1996, with 54 percent of the votes.

What are you guys talking about?

They still informally do it. For things like scholarships (especially the regent’s scholarship, where almost everyone has a 4.0 GPA), the selection criteria is very subjective.

HAHAHAHAHA. If you really think you are being discriminated against because you are white, then file a lawsuit and quit crying about it.

@OP I had a 4.0 with great EC’s and got into UCSD. I received no scholarships. When I asked financial aid, the lady told me all the merit based scholarships are given to entering freshman. Because I didn’t qualify for the Pell Grant, I did not receive the SMART scholarship that many of my peers from CCC did.

http://www.ucsd.edu/current-students/finances/financial-aid/types/scholarships/transfer-students.html

ah, there we go. So for UCSD it is only for freshmen. =\ shucks

G’luck getting the SMART scholarship (the big one - pay for a full ride) but they’ll give away money and things here and there.

And no being a minority does absolutely nothing for admission or academic scholarships. But with a 4.0 and your stats, you should get money. Ask what scholarships your CC have, look up scholarships, and improve your EC’s (be a tutor, internship, etc).

If you don’t get anything, it’s because you didn’t try hard enough… People don’t just give you free money and tuition, you have to look for it. PS. Save your scholarship essays as you will heavily recycle them…
