Chance for University of Florida, Maryland and Penn State [OH resident, 3.8 GPA, 1500 SAT, pre-med]

Did not realize Neuroscience was limited enrollment.

I’ve asked him to calculate Florida GPA

Fortunately even though neuroscience is limited enrollment it doesn’t seem difficult to declare.

(deleted unrelated non-admissibility info)…. Just jumping in to add a quick note. My S25 is a freshman at UF. And from everything I’ve seen (aside from a limited # of majors) you can declare whatever major you want-but that doesn’t mean you’ll actually be able to continue in that major once you are at UF.

That’s many majors at many schools.

But - it won’t impact admissibility - is the discussion here, no matter which major you choose on your application.

PSU: make sure to check his STARS/SRAR before submitting it (or correcting it if necessary). It should be submitted as soon as it’s available in the portal, and he can even start it ahead of time.
Is he applying Neuroscience or BBH? (BBH is more unique but both are typical premed majors. Stay away from “the premed major” in Eberly: med schools want to see students doing well in a major AND in premed pre-reqs.)
He should be applying to Schreyer too. The main criterion is the essays.

tOSU: he’s in and has a good shot at Medical/Health scholars

UF: likely/target as long as your recalculated GPA is in the 4.5+ range. Beware of the summer semester and online requirements (Florida students are used to it and absolutely don’t mind but it might matter to someone who may want to have an internship or a health related job near family/home. )

I assuming UF calculates GPA to include Freshman year? I know some schools don’t.

From the UCF website (sub school):

Yes. The Florida Board of Governors requires all students who enter a Florida public university with less than 60 semester hours to complete at least nine semester hours prior to graduation by attending one or more summer sessions. University presidents or their designees may waive the application of this regulation in cases of unusual hardship to the individual.

In your case, Bama or UGA are easy subs for Florida, with UGA similar admission difficulty and Bama half the price and with MCullough. The three schools are substitutional - even campus wise, etc. and all are loaded with smart kids (even Bama..because they buy them in).

Only Florida has the 9 unit rule if that’s an issue.

Most I know go down prior to school starting but some may do after. There may also be alternatives - the school can tell you.

There is a waiver that can be approved by the university but I wouldn’t count on it per se - I just don’t know. I don’t know anyone who waived out - but these are the reasons you would check:

  • I completed a summer internship.
  • I participated in military training and/or operations during the summer.
  • I completed six hours of studyabroad coursework.
  • I am a student athlete that must attend summer training camps and/or sports-related events.
  • I am experiencing financial hardship.
  • My program does not offer courses during the summer
