I am taking a gap year to work and volunteer. I’ll be applying with a:

3.5 UW, 3.75 W
3 A’s (hopefully) in Logic I, cross cultural psychology, and history of asian civ (taking at community college)
2160 SAT (700 W 700 CR 760 M)
but basically no EC’s up until this year, because my mom was bipolar and died sophomore year which devastated me
great recommendations and hopefully great essay
oh and I’m in state

Do you guys think I have a 50%+ chance?

Don’t bother applying, honestly, you need a higher GPA, given you had nothing Extra curricular wise to distract you from grades, you really have no excuse, except for your moms death ( sorry to hear that ), but when I went to the UVA admission sessions, they made it clear " sob stories " do not get you in,

I’m just saying, it looks like you did nothing out side of school yet did not excel in school

Best wishes to where ever you apply

“success is not a gift but a choice”

Doin–are you a legacy? That might help. I would make sure that admissions knows about your mom’s death. If you don’t get in, you might consider going to a community college, keeping your grades up and transferring in under the agreement.

Good Luck!

I know that GPA is important at UVA, but I took 11 AP credits as well…Hmm, I know a lot of people who got into UVA from my class with worse SAT scores and they couldn’t all have had much better gpas?

Holistic Approach - did they have extracurriculars?

and it is amazing you kept that GPA up, i know if anyone in my family died let alone my mom, i would of probably just dropped out of school

I have a few extracurriculars now that I am taking a gap year - volunteering, working, poetry/writing, rapping/MCing…but nothing too major. I am also taking 3 online courses, so if I get A’s on those hopefully it will make my high school grades less important

Still apply doinschool, bigshot doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about. Plus your scores are pretty good!

You never know if you don’t try!
