So Case and Rochester are a good start on research university Biochem Targets. Given some of the other colleges on your list, you might want to check out William & Mary. Although a public, it feels much more like a midsize private. Pitt would be more likely and may offer merit, and although a public it again can feel pretty different in some ways.

There are many more but this gives you some idea of what more likely LACs with strong Biochem look like, and merit is a possibility at all of these as well.
